I have encountered countless articles on Medium, outlining advice on how to achieve monetary gain.
I have researched numerous, vastly popular articles — close to 50 I would presume, written by high earning authors. In general, all articles echo 3 common sentiments.

In my world, writing consistently is not a chore, rather it is an intrinsic reward. Opening my laptop, typing and paraphrasing my thoughts to share with likeminded readers, excites me.
Networking, gaining feedback, self-education and gaining insights on topics I am interested in, excites me. Reading, excites me.
As such, I pose the golden question again, why have you joined Medium? What is your main contention? Writing for joy? Earning money? Or both? What is your ‘why’?
If your answer is both, which choice outweighs the other?
If your answer is earning money, you’re already losing.

I emphasise this notion as it can be easy to lose yourself and your values as a writer, when you start making bank.

1. CONSISTENCY
Set an achievable goal on how often you are going to post. More importantly, dedicate time to write. Depending on your schedule and personal circumstances, this could be 20 minutes of daily writing, 30 minutes, 10 minutes even, etc.,
So long as you’re setting achievable goals, writing will become second nature to you. While it is easy to allow life’s obstacles to impact your ability to write and post consistently, please, do not let this suck the therapeutic joy that writing brings you.
Barriers are inevitable but it is important to bear in mind, you are your own intrinsic motivator.
2. WRITE WITH PASSION
Writer burnout is real. Thus, writing about topics that you are passionate about is incredibly fundamental.
Sure, articles on cryptocurrency for example generally perform quite well. However, if you are not knowledgeable on this topic or INTERESTED in this topic, do not conform. Rather, focus on topics that provide you with sparks of enjoyment.
If you’re enthusiastic about your topic and able to portray this in your writing, your audience will be engaged. And the rest will come naturally.
3. REEL YOUR AUDIENCE IN WITH A CATCHY HEADLINE
Is there anything worse than reading a headline that quite literally, does not make sense? Or reading a headline with few words or too many words? My literary professor in university engrained the importance of “hooking your audience”.
Think about it.
A captivating and well thought out headline, communicates to your audience that your article is exactly what they need.
In the 3 seconds it takes to read your headline, your readers are making a snap decision. “Should I read this article? Does it interest me? How will I benefit or what will I gain?”
Being able to evoke curiosity or an emotional response within your reader, is a sign of quality writing. If you can achieve this through your headline, you are one foot in already.
By following the above tips, believe that you will eventually gain authentic readers.
Hard work will pay off. Consistency will pay off. Being a truly passionate writer will pay off. Spending time on headlines and formatting will pay off. Importantly, being patient will pay off. In the meantime, keep writing and persevering. I can guarantee, if you remain an authentic writer and hold on to your ‘why’, your love for writing will flourish and monetary gain will automatically follow.
