How to Live in Joy
Day 12: How my journaling ritual has taught me the power of words

This piece is day 12 in a 30 day series during the month of May on how to live in joy at home. Since we are still in lockdown here in Oregon at the time of this writing, I feel it is so important, now more than ever to find joy in the little things every single day. We are not sure how long this time will last. The more joy we can train our hearts to find each day will benefit us in the days, weeks and months to come, even after quarantine is over. This is my hope for all of us, that we come out of this time with a more joyful heart, able to appreciate the smallest things in our homes and in our lives. I invite other writers to join me on this journey and write about their daily joys at home.
Today’s piece is all about what I write in my journal each day. I have a special routine. Every morning as my son gets ready for his morning school meeting I make coffee for myself and for my husband.
I get out my journal. This is the start of a magical part of the day. A part of the day where I get to dream and explore.
My journal time is very special to me. I use a plain ballpoint pen and a green highlighter. It is the same every day. I use two pages daily in my journal. These take me on a journey of joy, exploration and future-casting every day, just by using a pen to write words on paper.
I truly believe that every word that we speak and every word that we write matters. It is casting something out into the world. How we choose those words shapes what our mind thinks and the types of actions we take on our dreams. It is all connected.
My journey with my ballpoint pen and my green highlighter with my coffee beside me has been a daily ritual for quite some time now. It has taken on even more meaning and more importance since the lockdown. This time with my journal is the time to connect with my dream world. What do I want my future to look like? For myself? For my husband and son? The words that I write today do matter, for today, for tomorrow, for the times to come.
Every day I write:
Ten things I am grateful for.
Three things, expressing how something felt as though they have already happened
Three things to do with abundance.
Two squares for things that are coming to me and things that have come to me.
These are the two most important pages that I write on each day. They signal to my mind what I am focusing on. They signal to my soul what I should take action on today. They signal to my heart what is vital that I pay attention to today. These are the words that I live by. They are the guide to my days. A guide to show me how to offer my joy to others, so that they may live in joy each day.
Here is an example of 3 things I wrote today:
It felt amazing to have a full group for the retreat!
It felt awesome to allow resources to flow to me!
It felt great to exceed my goals!
This is the work that I do daily. I put the future into my day right now. You can too! I encourage you to start this daily journaling process. I use my green highlighter to highlight the feeling words and to make green hearts in the page. To me, green is the color of abundance in nature, so I love green!
This practice has taught me to believe that anything is possible! It has taught me that the mind, heart and body are so powerful when combined with words. We can bring our words to life through a daily journaling ritual like this.
It is a very magical point in our day. A point where we can choose our destiny! A point where we get to choose! A point where we learn how to take our futures into our own hands!
What future will you create from your words today?
With lots of love,
Trista
