How to Live in Joy

Day 5: How my daily cleaning rounds have more meaning now

Photo by the author in her cleaning apron: Trista Signe Ainsworth

These articles are a 30 day challenge during the month of May to myself and others to think about how to live in joy and what is joyful to them. At this time we are still in lockdown here in Oregon and so everything in our homes matters so much to us. It has taken on new meaning. Every day I will look at one thing that brings me joy in my home. It is a way to reflect and find happiness in the small things.

Every day I have a daily tidy-up routine. I have had this routine for quite some time. It has kept my home running smoothly day in and day out. Most of the time we really don’t have chaos here because of our routines to keep things clean, neat and in working order. I believe that now more than ever, this routine and the familiarity of it has kept me grounded during these uncertain times. We don’t know when lockdown will end. We don’t know what the new normal will be. We don’t know what life will be like even tomorrow.

I do know that tomorrow I will get up and do my routine. And that brings comfort. In turn, that brings joy.

I can live in joy in my home knowing that is is taken care of. My family is taken care of. We have what we need. We are living in joy.

Every day after breakfast I start my daily chore routine. It only takes about 20 minutes but it is one of the pillars of my day. I make sure the dishes are done. I sweep the floors. I gather the laundry and start the washing machine. I make the bed. I put a few things back where they belong. Once this is done, the day has started out fresh. The joy has entered our home. Anything left from tomorrow has left and it’s time to begin again. It’s time to start anew. It’s time to let the new joy of the day permeate our home.

This is not a detailed cleaning of our home every day, but it sets us all up for a productive, healthy and wonderful day. It says to life and the universe and God: we are ready to begin. Our home is ready. We are ready. Our hearts are ready.

My husband and son also participate in keeping our home tidy. On the weekends my husband does all of the vacuuming. They also both help with dishes and setting the table. My son is the “chief sanitation officer” as he takes out all of the garbage, recycling and compost. Also, I often ask both of them to help me with things.

What is a small routine you do daily to live in joy?

With lots of love and light,

Trista
