How to Live in Joy:

A 30 Day Journey: Day 1

Day 1: Backyard Animals

Today I am embarking on a journey. I am not leaving my home at this time because we are in lockdown here. However, I am going on a journey to explore how to live in joy. This is my “why” in life, to help others live in joy. I am on a journey right now to discover what that means over the next 30 days. This is a challenge to myself to create writing and videos to capture what that means and share with others.

If ever there was a time to explore living in joy, now is the time. It seems like so many of the things that we enjoyed we cannot do at this time. This is a perfect time to go inwards and to discover if there are other ways that we can live in joy right in our own homes. Right when our options are limited, that is where we can find the joy that has been there all along. We were too busy to see it. We were too rushed. We had to get to the next meeting. We had to schedule the next appointment. We had to get our to-do list done. All the while, there were small joys waiting there for us that we had no idea were there.

On this first day of living in joy I am going to explore backyard animals. Before the lockdown we had been working on feeding the squirrels and hummingbirds in our backyard. At first we threw out peanuts for the squirrels. They loved them! However, sometimes the large bluejays would take the peanuts and the squirrels would be left with very few. My husband devised a special pipe that the squirrels can go into to get the peanuts, however the bluejays can’t get in. We always call the squirrels “chippy.” They are getting to know us and one of the squirrels stopped, sat on the step and looked right at me while I was talking on the phone today!

We didn’t want to exclude the bluejays entirely, so we filled our handing birdbath with some birdseed. This is so lovely because both the bluejays and the smaller birds enjoy sitting in it and eating the seeds. The very small birds get to eat the seeds that fall to the ground. This is a win-win-win situation which is my favorite!

The hummingbirds have been putting on a spectacular show as well. We have a feeder right by the garden window of our kitchen. We love to see them come up there. I love it because we exclaim throughout the day “hummingbird!” It was fun one day when my husband went to work for a while at the outside table. He put the hummingbird feeder right on the table with him and the hummingbird came to it! It was exciting to have one so close by! We have seen them circling one another and flying all about. Their colors are so vibrant and amazing! I just love to stop and see the beauty of the squirrels and birds in our garden. We are finding such joy sharing our area with the wildlife. It provides daily smiles and so much fun!

I have also enjoyed seeing different types of bees on the flowers that are blooming. Some are fluffy bumblebees and some are smaller ones. I have also seen small little butterflies stopping by. I have even found the ants amazing, they are in such large groups and move about so quickly. I often see them around certain plants in the garden.

We are living in joy right here in our backyard, being able to take in the joy of the wildlife that is all around us. We are enjoying nature’s entertainment and we are so glad that we have this opportunity.

How do you live in joy?

I look forward to sharing with all of you for the next 30 days!

With lots of love and light,

Trista
