How to Live in Joy:
Day 8: How my grandma visits me each spring through the roses

During the month of May for 30 days I’m challenging myself to explore how to live in joy in my home during this time of lockdown. It is a time to notice and be grateful for all of the little things. In our own home and in our lives we can always find things that are joyful. I invite any other writers to join me on this journey to joy during this month of May, 2020.
Today I thought about how much of a slower pace we are living in our day to day lives in our home. Last night as my husband and I sat around our fire pit in the backyard we pondered how busy we used to be, or how fast life seemed to pass by before. What a rush or a hurry we used to be in. We thought that it was so nice that now on weekends and even on weekdays we have a lot more time to just be. To rest, to enjoy the days.
I pondered this and thought that I want to really learn a valuable lesson from this time. That we DO have enough time. We DON’T have to rush. We can savor things. We can notice things. We CAN really stop to smell the roses.
In fact, every day I now go into the garden to see what little changes have happened. Now I am eagerly awaiting the first roses to bloom on one of the beautiful rose bushes I planted so many years ago in our garden. I planted this particular one for my grandma Marion. She had a lot of lovely roses in front of her home. She taught me how to take care of them. My favorite ones were ones that looked just like a beautiful sunset. They were light yellow with pink tinges and hints of orange.
I feel that as the roses start to develop, she is getting ready to visit me again. She passed away so many years ago, but every year I can feel her energy and love in the roses in my garden. Each day I see a little more color on the buds as they get ready to bloom. Life is opening up for us like a beautiful flower if we take the time to notice.
I am looking forward to my grandma’s visit through the beautiful roses. I can talk to my roses each day as though they were her. I miss her, but she is here in spirit with me right now. She is here in the beautiful rose buds, in the leaves, in the soft wind and in the sunshine. I notice her in every step I take in the garden. She is asking me not to rush, to take it slow today. She is telling me to see all of the colors, to notice the shine on the leaves. To be grateful for the days we have right now.
What have you stopped to notice today?
