How to Live Alone Happily in the Pandemic

Action plan to combat loneliness in the time of uncertainty

Solitude can be a splendid thing, but living alone in the pandemic can become a condition to treat as well as a skill to master.

“It has been an emotional turmoil,” — says my college-fellow who lacked the chance to visit his home-place amid coronavirus. He has been living here alone as a Paying Guest.

“There were times when I felt the walls were closing in. But there were also times when I was happy to be alone. And at that time, I started examining my state of mind. Why was I feeling okay at certain times? How could I find that space more often?” — he stated.

I guided him to embed the following points in his daily life and watch out for the changes.

Undoubtedly, it worked.

Document Your Days

Start writing down your thoughts. Start documenting your days and the activities you perform in a journal or diary.

I have been doing it since the onset of lockdown globally in march. I write down each activity, the highs of life I enjoy, the lows I go through. I pen down each feeling — anger, happiness, anxiety, self-doubt, loneliness, and many more.

Writing is one of the key-tools in dealing with isolation.

It helps your thoughts to navigate easily. Frequently, we get tangled in our thoughts. One minute we are happy, and the other minute we immerse in self-doubts. Especially during these uncertain times, it should be mandatory for everyone to start documenting their life.

Writing helps us to live with our thoughts by making peace with them.

Talk and Listen

Reaching out to your family, friends, or loved ones and talking to them(virtually) makes you feel connected.

Make a certain number of phone or video calls every day. Listen to your friends and family with actual interest.

These conversations will build a sense of security. It will shower upon you a sense of happiness, calmness, and love.

You may be the only one in the room, but you aren’t alone.

Cheer Yourself Up

Inject joy into your routine. It’s time to be a little unprofessional at the work front, not confining yourself in the office walls or college classrooms. And this is okay.

Wear your favorite outfit. Eat your favorite snack during work hours. Listen to music. Read your favorite book.

People are losing jobs, salaries cut down enormously. Unemployment is at a surge. We are going through a pandemic. These things are enough to stress you out.

Don’t forget to cheer yourself up. Listen to songs, dance to it. Stage a concert in your room.

Make your alone-time an incredible one.

Make or Create

It’s been months we are staring at the same walls, the same scenery outside our balconies, the same white ceiling. It’s time to add diversity into your life.

It might look unharmful at first, but what if I say — lack of diversity is leading you to fatigue, under productiveness, and frustrated mood throughout the day.

On the contrary, a constructive activity can enhance your happiness, giving you a sense of purpose.

Set up a balcony garden, bake yourself a cake, perhaps even return to the crafts you enjoyed as a child. You never know what hits you. Try different things.

Be Optimistic

We often say our thoughts define our feelings and mood. But it’s a lie because your actions determine your feelings.

When nothing works out, optimism shines.

Get up early. Take a cold shower. Eat a healthy breakfast. Listen to good music, read your favorite novel. Immerse in different activities. Learn a new thing or two. Talk to your loved ones.

If we perform our day to day activities with enthusiasm and joy, we will be full of optimism and will never feel lonely or unproductive.

Be optimistic, and always keep a smile on your face.

Final Thoughts

We all are going through a pandemic. It’s enough to stress you out. As you know that mental health has taken a new turn, we cannot be blind about your daily life.

You come first. Your health is a priority. Taking care of yourself is a mission.

Keep smiling, eat healthy, exercise, be in touch with your loved ones.

Have a healthy and productive life.
