As any Medium writer knows, building a following on the platform is crucial to gaining exposure and growing your readership. As we also know, it can be challenging to attract new readers, especially when you’re just in the starting phase. One way to boost your reach and attract new followers is to join Facebook groups related to the Medium platform itself. Yes, there’s in fact a wealth of them out there worth joining!

You may be reticent to join Medium Facebook Groups, doubtful that they can provide the genuine and meaningful engagement and readership you are looking for (as you are willing to invest this in others), but I assure you, it’s undoubtedly out there. Yes, there may be a handful of selfish users who don’t reciprocate reads or genuine engagement, but these candidates soon get found out if they are repeat offenders in the same groups, and there’s a community feeling of support and genuine investment in the groups below to authentically help other writers.

How to use Medium Facebook Groups

Facebook groups not only offer a unique opportunity to connect with the Medium community of writers (out with Medium itself), but you’re likely to find people who are interested in achieving the same goals as you, up for sharing advice, as well as their own success stories and techniques. You may even be surprised to find that you find like-minded individuals interested in the same niche, or people that genuinely became fans because they love your content.

By joining groups, you can engage with people who are interested in your work and who may be interested in following you on Medium. Not only do Facebook groups provide an opportunity to connect with potential readers, but they also offer a chance to network with other writers and learn from their experiences. In these groups, here are some steps that will set you on the right path:

  1. Share your work: Post links to your stories asking for genuine reads and engagements.
  2. Read and engage with others’ work: Not only should you of course reciprocate reads and engagement on those that take the time in the group to do so on your posts, but you should also be actively commenting on others’ posts in the group to support them.
  3. Ask for feedback: Reach out to the community to ask for constructive feedback on your work.
  4. Get tips: Ask for advice or learn from others via what they share in the group.

How NOT to use Medium Facebook Groups

When you join a Facebook group, it’s important to engage with others and participate in discussions as touched open above. Share your insights and experiences, and don’t be afraid to ask questions or seek feedback. By being an active member of the group, you’ll build relationships with other members and increase your visibility. But there are a number of no-nos that should be avoided:

  1. Don’t spam: Don’t become that user that does nothing but post multiple links to your Medium articles every day. This will first-off most likely go against group rules and you could find yourself banned. Secondly, by incessantly spamming the page, you’ll be certain to annoy the community (in itself a bad move, as people are less likely to read your work) and over-saturate the group’s content with your own, taking away from giving others a spotlight.
  2. Don’t ignore comments on your posts: Never post asking for reads and engagement if you do not genuinely reciprocate to those who do so on your work and then share their own links with you. It’s not respectful, it’s a dirty tactic, and will also sooner rather than later most likely get you banned.
  3. Don’t claim to have read when you’ve not: Repeat after me: “I must not tell lies.” Sadly, there are users out there who will claim to have “read” a piece, but have merely clicked onto the article, hit the clap button, and then existed — probably not so much as spending more than ten seconds on your story. If you claim to have read a piece — make sure you’ve done just that. Read all the way through, or at least spend as much time on that story as the read time (in minutes) as your own article that the person engaged with.
