How To Give To Others If You Don’t Have Money
The wise old owl sat on his perch. It’s high above their homes so he can see danger from any direction. One day a young owl came to sit with him. The young owl was very inquisitive and asked the old owl relentless questions.
The wise old owl answered all the questions patiently and thoroughly. the young owl was so consumed with the answers his mind was racing.
He hardly even looked at the old owl sitting next to him. When he looked up at the old owl with awe and gratitude he noticed something.
“What happened to your beak?” He asked
The old owl slowly turned his head.
“When I was a young owl I was very ambitious and one day I was very hungry. I saw something moving along the ground at an incredibly slow pace so I went in for the kill. I landed with my claws first, like always, but when I went in with my beak it cracked on the hard shell.”
“Is that why my mom said not to eat the turtles?”
“It sure is.”
The young owl now began to examine the old owl.
“What happened to your wing?”
“A fox”
“Fox? What do you mean?”
The old owl shifted on the porch when he thought about the attack.
“When I was younger I saw a Fox who was chasing a poor little rabbit that had gotten lost. This little bunny had no chance so I decided to help. I can fly, I have sharp claws, I can take him on I thought. I swooped in as fast as I could to keep the element of surprise and dug my claws deep into his back.”
The young owl stared up, transfixed by the story.
“Just as I was going to pick him up and save the bunny he turned on me. His head jerked back and he gnashed his teeth. I screeched and flapped my wings to distract him so the little one could make an escape. As we tussled the fox managed to get loose and jumped high enough to grab my wing. I got away, but not without this scar.”
The young owl’s eyes were as wide as could be. He sat in silence, not sure how to react to the story. As he sat there he started to think. He was finally out of questions, except one.
“If you are such a wise owl why would you do such silly things like try to eat a turtle or chase a fox? Everyone knows those aren’t good ideas.”
The old owl was quiet for a moment.
“The reason everyone knows it is that I made those mistakes when I was your age. As I grew I made mistakes and learned from them. Once I learned these things I was able to teach them to others. The reason I’m a wise old owl is that I was a silly young owl.”
The young owl puffed his chest out and stood tall. “So I can be wise like you one day?”
“You can be wiser, by taking what I have learned and going farther. Try new things and make mistakes. When you learn your lesson make sure to pass it on to the young owls you meet.”
