What Do I Say When They Ask About My Criminal Record?
Mark shuffled into the building, dressed in his nicest clothes he made every attempt to look clean and respectable. This wasn’t easy for him, even before he went away he felt uncomfortable in most situations. His stiff demeanor and awkward, shifting eyes were caused by fear but they came across as anger.
Most people are afraid to approach him and only the truly sick people would ever challenge him. His presence alone was enough to make people uneasy. Mark asked to speak to the manager in the nicest way he could. Shifting from side to side, Mark ran his fingers around the edge of the paper he was holding.
When the manager appeared he was taken aback. Not only was the manager a woman, but she was also a very beautiful woman.
Mark took a deep breath and smiled. She smiled back, so far so good, now he just had to remain professional. After the brief introduction, they both sat at a table and Mark slid the piece of paper across the table. The manager picked up his resume and began to read.
“I notice a gap in your employment, what have you been doing for work for the past two years?”
Mark’s stomach sank and he began to sweat, he thought about how to answer this question before, he had his lie ready to go. But for some reason, maybe it was the way her eyes glowed or the way he felt when she smiled, but he couldn’t lie to her.
“I was in jail.”
Mark looked down at his lap and held his breath, bracing himself for the inevitable. He knew if he told them the truth he wouldn’t get the job.
“Oh, I see, are you on parole?” “No” “Ok”
Mark was confused by this, he assumed she was going to tell him to leave, it took a few seconds to get his bearings. The rest of the interview went great and in the end, she offered him the job. Mark was happy, but he had to know, did she not care he was a felon?
“Does it matter that I have a criminal record?”
The manager was now the one taken aback. “No of course not, in this industry most of us are felons.”
Most of us? Was she a degenerate criminal like me?
The answer is yes, at least she was. She went on to tell Mark about her history and how this job helped her get her life together.
“Every day I would show up and do the best I could. It took a while but I knew that the only way to get out of my old life was to make a change today. Looking at each new day as an opportunity to learn and grow, to be better than we were yesterday.”
After her speech, Mark was officially in love with this woman. Not only was he excited about his new job and the opportunities it presented, but he was also interested to meet the people working there too. Not just the pretty woman but all of the other dysfunctional degenerates like him that populate the halls of this twisted enterprise.
Mark now had something he hadn’t had in years, a sense of belonging. He had an opportunity to make a change for good this time. Mark now had something he’s never had before, hope for the future.
