How to Deal with the Awkward Things That Happen during Sex
10 embarrassing sexual moments that don’t have to ruin the vibe

Sex can be romantic and slow, can be carnal and messy; it can be anything in between and everything in the same encounter. There’s no recipe, and it’s unpredictable to know how our bodies will behave throughout the pleasure.
One thing can never be discarded: awkward things can happen during sex.
When you’re having sex with someone, you’re sharing your body with them: the ins and outs, the sexy bits and the opposite. So, “accidents” will happen.
Today, I’m talking about the most common embarrassing sex moments and how you can deal with them, without ruining the vibes.
How to deal with the awkward things that happen during sex
One thing you should have in mind is that everybody goes through it. At one point or the other, each one of us experienced embarrassing moments during sex.
Your first reaction might be to be ashamed or wanting to dig a hole to bury yourself in it, but let me assure you this: you don’t have to. Even if you’re having sex with your crush or you’re having a one-night stand, there’s no reason for the awkward moment to ruin your sexual encounter.
Here are the most frequent situations that happen during sex and how you can deal with them:
1. Queefing (vaginal flatulence)
This is very common to happen during sex.
Despite the sound being similar to a fart, queefing is merely the air that gets trapped inside the vagina — by the penis, fingers or sex toys — being pushed out.
There’s no way to prevent queefing and there’s no consequence to it (like a smell), so when it happens, my suggestion is for you to keep doing what you’re doing. Ignoring it, it’s really the best you can do.
2. Get menstruated during sex
This happened to me several times. Being on my period was never a reason not to have sex (I never had a sexual partner with issues about it), so it has happened my period start during sex.
I’m very regular on my menstruation, I always know the day I’ll start it. I usually share that information with my partner, so he won’t get caught by surprise, but to be honest, nothing changes in our sexual dynamic.
However, I understand that for many women, especially if you’re not in a relationship with the person, starting the period during the sexual act can be an awkward moment.
Because it’s a natural thing to happen, your reaction should also be natural. You can either keep doing what you’re doing, or you can stop it and go to the bathroom to clean up. What happens after it — continuing or not to have sex — it’s up to you and your partner.
One thing I strongly recommend is not to be embarrassed or apologise for it. It’s out of your control and you should never feel ashamed of your body doing what it’s supposed to do.
If your partner reacts badly, I think it’s time for your guys to have a proper conversation about the topic
3. Lack of erection
Also known as “stage fright”, lack of erection can happen to anyone, either for physiological reasons or psychological ones, like stress, afraid to disappoint or tiredness.
If this happens, don’t overthink it. Engage in more foreplay — that might help you to “warm-up” — , or add sex toys to the fun!
4. Premature ejaculation
Men don’t have to have a clinical diagnosis to suffer from occasional premature ejaculation; there are several reasons for that occurrence, as on the previous point.
If that happens, there’s no reason to stop enjoying your partner’s body. Use your refractory moment to give them pleasure — using sex toys, your fingers, your tongue…
Be creative and don't let your unexpected climax end (or disturb) the fun.
5. Cramps
Cramps are a bitch; it’s hard to keep going with acute pain in a muscle.
It can be very frustrating when you or your partner are about to cum, and suddenly you have to stop because of a cramp. You can try to fight it, but it’s unlikely you’ll win.
The solution will be to stop, relax the muscle (stretch it) and then pick it up where you left.
6. Dirty talking going bad
Sometimes, in the heat of the moment, one can get too enthusiastic and say something out of the usual scope. Catching a sexual partner by surprise with dirty talking can be a mood killer.
If this happens, there’s no need to make a big deal out of it. Step back in your dirty talking (either stopping it completely or adjusting to a level you’re both comfortable), and continue the physical interaction.
Not everyone is comfortable with dirty talk, so before you use it, be sure to talk with your partner beforehand. Agree with what terms/sentence are off-limits.
7. Anal discharges
When having anal play or anal sex, if you/your partner haven’t emptied the bowels, be prepared for an accident to occur.
If an anal discharge happens, the best thing is to take it with humour. Clean it up and move forward!
8. Losing the condom inside her
This can be both an embarrassing situation as an unnerving one.
Pulling your dick out to realise the condom stayed inside your partner is definitely entitled to the awkward title. And this one you can’t pretend it didn’t happen, like queefing or even a fart.
The immediate thing to do is to communicate it to your partner — you need to take it out. If you’re unable to, a visit to the emergency room will be your next stop.
A discussion about potential pregnancy or STI should also occur.
9. Your pet joins you
My dog is a voyeur. Often, I’m having sex and suddenly, there he is, with his head on the bed, looking at us with the most curious and “wtf” expression on his face. Other times, he decides to lick our feet or legs.
I’ve read about people whose dogs jump into the bed and started to dry humping one of them. Talking about killing the mood!
There are several ways to deal with. One, of course, is to laugh and keep going. The other is to lock the pet out of the bedroom.
10. You cum in their face, by mistake
This one never happened to me, but to one of my friends. She was giving her boyfriend head and told him to cum to her tits. But he missed the target and came on her face, including her eyes.
There’s not much to do here except to apologise and clean your partner.
Awkward moments are part of sex. It’s how you react to them that will make them more or less embarrassing.
My suggestion is to deal with things with humour. Let the situation be a way for you and your partner to connect in a significant way, and make sex even more fun!
