Summary

The author transitioned from a software-related job to making money in Web3 Security within approximately 5 months through self-study, community engagement, and course participation.

Abstract

The author, with a technical background and 8 years in software but no prior experience in web security or development, embarked on a journey into Blockchain and Web3 Security. Starting with YouTube videos and books, the author later enrolled in a Blockchain course, learned Solidity, and eventually focused on Web3 Security. Within a month of intensively studying smart contract hacking, the author began earning money through various avenues, including writing articles on Medium, auditing smart contracts, becoming an ambassador for a hacking course, and offering consultations. The author attributes the success to a combination of coursework, community engagement, and independent research.

When you’re dedicated fully to learning something new for a professional career change, the money factor is often important. So, I would like to share my experience on how long it’s taken me to start making money since I got into Blockchain.

I’m going to go through:

  • My background
  • When did I start to get involved with Blockchain?
  • When did I actually start learning?
  • When did I get into Solidity?
  • When did I focus on Web3 Security?
  • How long did it take me to make money and in which ways?

My background

Before starting to learn about Blockchain I had no past experience in web security and while I knew some programming languages, I was not a developer.

I am a technical person and I have been working in a software-related job for the last 8 years.

( Find out more about my starting point in this article “How do you even start learning about Blockchain?”)

When did I start to get involved with Blockchain?

Around 7 months ago I started to occasionally watch some YouTube videos about Blockchain.

A bit later I started to read some books about Blockchain, in order to try to understand better what it is and if I actually like it. I was trying to understand if this is a career path that would work for me.

When did I actually start learning?

I joined a course to learn about Blockchain, Web3, and DeFi around 5 months ago, as a good friend of mine was a teacher there, and I knew I could trust her.

It was live sessions 3 classes per week of 1–2 hours each.

When did I get into Solidity?

While participating in the course I did check things about Solidity but probably I can say I started actually learning Solidity with Patrick’s 32 hours course 4 months ago more or less.

Now, when did I decide to focus on Web3 Security?

So, I remember joining my first community on Discord where I found out more things about Web3 security but it wasn’t until I joined 3 months ago the Smart Contract Hacking course that I went all in with learning about smart contract hacking, attack vectors, Defi exploits and learning about auditing DeFi protocols.

So, how long it took me to start making money, and in which ways I made money so far?

Writing

So, a month after getting into the Smart Contract Hacking course, or also, 2 months ago I started to make some money from my articles on Medium.

How? I have been sharing everything I learn, recommending material, and doing some tutorials on Medium. But also, I’ve been doing all that on Twitter where I‘ve reached 1000 followers in these past 2 months.

Why are those followers important? The more audience, the more chance they read and share my articles.

Auditing Smart Contracts

After 3–4 weeks of learning about attack vectors, practicing smart contract hacking, and connecting with the Web3 community on Twitter and Discord, I decided to take the step and start participating in Code4rena public audits.

First Course Ambassador Student

I was promoted as the first course ambassador student on the Smart Contract Hacking course which allowed me to start monetizing with my recommendations in articles and on Twitter.

[Find out more about it in my article]

Consultations

Being active on Twitter and Medium has allowed me to connect with very skilled and amazing people. And I have been fortunate enough to have the chance to help others and monetize from it as well.

To sum up

It took me 5 months of learning about Blockchain, Solidity, and DeFi until I got into Web3 Security.

From the moment I started learning Web3 Security with the Smart Contract Hacking course it only took me one month to start making money.

Of course, I combined the course with consuming a lot of different material from other fellow colleagues in the community and a lot of research on my own.

So now that you know more about my path until today, I would like to share with you a limited $50 discount to join the Smart Contract Hacking course.

This alone is not going to get you to make money, but hard work, this course, and being part of the web3 community will do for sure!

Go ahead and join the course through the link above and you will get your discount.
