How I Spend £15,000 on Vacations
Life is busy but we all need time to slow down

Taking time away is an art, a delicate balance of exploring new places while revisiting the corners of the world that we’ve grown to love.
Every year, I allocate around £15,000 towards getting away, a budget that allows me to keep going. It’s the one thing I don’t mind spending money on.
Getting away to these places each year is worth much more than a new laptop, phone or a new jacket.
Spain
Time is restricted because of my children's school calendar but if we don’t get away in February then our first trip of the year is March. We are blessed to have a property in Spain and I spend two weeks here, almost at a reverse pace. Return flights at this time of year from Scotland are around £1,600 for 2 adults and 3 children.
We don’t need luggage.
Summer in Spain is an extended trip, lasting anywhere from three to four weeks. This is because I can work from home and my wife can take some unpaid leave.
We leave as soon as school breaks for the holidays and flights are around £1,800 return.
This is when we get a taste of what life would be like abroad. I often work for around 2 weeks of this break and it always gives me the same question when I return home. Why return home?
All going well, we get away for a third time in October when the school breaks again. Flights are around £1,500 return and this is us winding down. Getting ready for Christmas.
Home: Scotland
8 years ago we ended up in an island off the west coast to a beautiful hotel.
We have been back every year since. Monday to Friday. It costs about £4,000 all in but is worth every penny.
We go on walks in the morning and the day is full of activities like segways, kayaking, archery among many others.
We eat out every day in a few of the restaurants and just be.
This is my favourite trip of the year.
As the year winds down, we end up in a cabin in the highlands of Scotland for a week in December, normally the week before Christmas. This is a time for reflection, buried in the snow-capped hills and beneath the clear winter sky. The solitude, with its breathtaking scenery is the perfect backdrop to ponder the year past and dream of the year to come.
Your Most Important Budget Line
Allocating £15,000 for these trips may seem extravagant, but it’s an investment in experiences that enrich the soul. This budget covers flights, accommodations (excluding my own house in Spain), eating out, and the number of activities that each location offers. It’s not just about the places; it’s about the moments. Each trip, a chapter in my year, each destination, a catalogue of memories that last a lifetime.
Traveling, for me, is more than seeing new places. It’s about returning to where my soul finds peace, about finding joy in both the familiar and the unknown. It’s a testament to the idea that the best experiences are worth investing in, worth planning for, and definitely worth the £15,000 I set aside each year.
