How I Messed Up My September Earnings- $58.76- on Medium (And How You Can Avoid It)

Three lessons I learned in a nutshell.

Please understand that September is a tough month for me. For the past 10 years, I have struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts during this time of the year.

Even though I have been trying to overcome this for the past three years, it’s still not easy.

I set monthly goals for myself, and one of them was to earn $50 on Medium in September. This was a huge mistake, because it was too low and not challenging enough.

I reached my goal within two weeks, and then I lost all motivation. I stopped writing, publishing, reading, clapping, and commenting on Medium.

I was depressed for most of the month, barely getting out of bed and doing anything productive. My husband was very supportive, but we also had a lot of arguments that made things worse. It was our second September together since we got married.

I ended up earning $58.76 on Medium and posted 13 articles in September:

Most of my articles earned between $1 and $5, except for these two that earned more than $7:

I’m glad that I achieved my goal, but I’m also disappointed that I didn’t do more. Not just on Medium, but in life in general.

So, what did I learn from this experience? And how can you avoid making the same mistakes as me? Here are some lessons and tips that I want to share with you:

Lesson 1: Treat Medium as a Part-Time Job

Medium is a source of income, not a hobby. Dedicate 3–6 hours daily to read, comment, write, and publish. Reading and commenting will help you learn and network.

Would you quit your job if you didn’t feel like it or felt depressed?

Lesson 2: Make Mental Health and Physical Health a Priority

Write about your feelings and goals. Challenge your negative thoughts. Read inspiring and relevant articles. Seek help when you need it. Do what you can, even if it’s just the bare minimum.

Lesson 3: Create Systems

Systems are the key to success. They consist of routines, habits, and cues that make things easier and more enjoyable.

For example, you can use your laptop or phone, depending on your preference for medium. You can also wake up early or write at night, depending on your schedule.

Authors Note: My October challenge is to write more than 20 articles and make $80. I will also try to stay engaged on Medium and connect with the community there.

Edited later: I was unaware of the recent changes to earnings, and I’m not sure if earning $80 this month is possible. Despite doing everything right, I have yet to earn a significant amount of money.
