When was the last time you were on YouTube or did you last watch a movie on Netflix?

The reason I asked is — does every video make you believe the world is a better place, or that every video you watched on YouTube makes you jump for joy. Does every video make you laugh hard, cry, or gives you an Oprah moment?

But let us go deep into why it is a trigger for you every time you read — “How I made X money in X days.”

This term has been casually used to refer to the experience of having an emotional reaction to some type of disturbing content (such as violence or the mention of suicide) in the media or in another social setting.

If you find “How I made X money, in X days. ” — disturbing, you have to get to the root of why it is a trigger for you, enough that you write about it.

I read this kind of story, and most of the time, I end up disappointed, but I move on to the next story of the day.

And I read a lot of stories each day. My day starts with reading the stories curated by Morning Brew and NextDraft.

If I read a “bad” story, would I berate the writer?

Frankly, it is none of my business what people write. So the only thing I focus on is — the stories I write for myself and my audience.

Maybe these writers who always talk about how much money they make also write for themselves and their audience.

Will it be money? There is nothing wrong with that, and for myself, I am looking for balance.

I don’t find money to be evil. And I want writing to be my bread and butter because I enjoy writing.

Will I always come up with well-thought stories?

Ideally, I would, but sometimes I want to share my personal stories, be goofy, and may even share “How I made X money in X days.” or a variation of it like — How to lose 20 lbs in 30 days

Writers’s Motivation

Our motivations are different from each other. To a writer like myself, $100 means something, and I could understand that $100 in America means nothing.

Maybe where she is, the money she makes from writing makes a difference in having a hot meal or not.

I get it. You want to get the most out of your subscription.

If you are not earning as a writer, it can get frustrating to see why writers who as not as “good” as you and English, not being their first language, have it all figured out?

There is a difference when all that writer writes is about one thing, like a repurposed content, only changing a few sentences, and then that is — spamming.

What can you do?

You can use tools provided by the platform, or you can block the writer and train the algorithm by reading new pieces. The next time you see another “How I made X money, in X days, ” you can also choose to — skip it, close your eyes, and breathe.

When I was doing photography, I also saw the same “snobbery” from some photographers—the ones who went to school for it, who look down on those who are self-taught.

The world can have one less “snob,” one less person who rants, bullies, and you don't have to be that person.

You can choose to believe in yourself and others. But, the world is too big that we can all coexist.
