How I Find the Missing Piece to Gain 0–100 Followers & Beyond.
Past couple nights I rethought of solving my own problem, which is lack of growth cause by limited visibility. If you believe the algorithm is not working for you, why don’t you do something about it.

I understand that in order for you to read the whole thing, I have to put up the result upfront.
Here is my result after implementing the below principles (view them as a flexible way to alter for improvements)

Basically what happen was I post an article on Dec 17 after doing my research and inputting ways to improve it and the next day I came across Carl Jeffers’s post that did very well and my tactic mind said, I have something similar to share and let me try it with additional kind of effort. (as you can see that the result has double in terms of views and reads)
Below I’m going to share how I try to solve this problem and how it has work out so far.
First, I most say, there is no right or one way to grow your audience on Medium.
Second, in order to deliver result that is relevant and effective, I’m infusing what I learn from other great articles on Medium.(they might not be the most trending one but each article serves it’s purpose in the growth curve that it is in) By understanding that we are competing for the same attention with different articles at a time.
With that in mind. Here is a check list questions for you to tell if you are trying to work against the platform or use it’s algorithm to your favorite posting goals.
- Are you writing to have more followers? (this is a byproduct of your work so far, you already have the answer)
- Are the Topic you post under is what your interests lies and if it can correlate between your core message or subject you want to explore? (unless you are naturally talented in storytelling with insightful data, then you would need recurring readers that is easier to build with 2–3 correlating factors) For example, Money, Growth on Medium and Mindset.
- Look at what you read on Medium, ask yourself, why are you reading it. (is it because of the For you section? what made you click on the one you just read?)

What's behind the for you section is a hint of result that Medium is displaying base on your preference and your browsing history.
Keep in mind that your article is going to look like the format below when a reader or writer sees it.

You have a Title, short description, Main topic it’s under, Author’s name, first main image from the article. With the title holds the most weight, please do research or try different title that works for your niche or subject.
Basically, you only get a few second to catch a reader’s attention before they click on someone’s else article. (understand other factors are important as well but for this article we’ll emphasize the title only)
This section contains countless trial and errors by reviewing what works for the topics that I post under.
Third is overall consistency matters the most in the beginning. (this maybe first 100 followers or 1000 followers, the longer you main this the better)
Let me explain, I posted 18 articles, comments over 100 times within 20 days. Time spent were 2 hour on article and 30 minutes on commenting. Or about 50 hours in total.
The Key take away is to layout a foundation of post while you interact with others. After all, your posts does determine if they want to follow you after reading them. (I consider my time spent on Medium is tight since I’m a 9–6er and a father of 2 soon.) If you want to move forward, please make room for time and quality work.

Hope by now you can see that getting follower was never the main focus.
An images of my followers stats as of 12/15. (if you only want followers you can try commenting more often, by giving meaningful comments related to the subject of course)

Here why you should comment more often. It does drive a lot of traffic to your profile over time. (think and say something meaningful and share it)

If only one set of things I want you to take away from this article is the few Tips on how to write a post that draws in attention base on market needs without constantly posting articles that you don’t want to post.
- Consistent with Quality post.
- Catch the reader’s attention at first sight.
- Put in the framework or format that works well in your niche or topic.
- Use comments and claps as an engagement tool. (a good comment can sit on a viral post forever)
- Tell a story, not a research paper.
And there is many more ways for you to explore what works better for yourself.
Below are Three article I come across while writing this article.
- Two article from Carl Jeffers, shares an in-depth insight on how he gain 100 following within 21 days. In addition on how he made $100 within the first 26 days on Medium. (this one has lots of gems to dig)
- Emily is typing… came across one of my latest post and left a clap (I believe what alike attracts one another) Where I read her article on how to earn on Medium with a very detail principles and list that I agree with but yet to explore all of them.
And if you have not read my best preforming post so far, you should take a look.
That’s it.
Remember to clap and comment, not just for me but for the ones behind you which may be you yesterday.
Thanks for reading till the end, this post maybe updated if I need any area that is in need to.
