How Do We Get Past This?
A Poem

Felt at peace for about four days, then the weeping madness crept back in again. Felt the heart tighten, the air wheezing through me, knew something had to change. Me. Here’s the beginning of this effort.
Began to breathe again It felt good, Began to feel again felt even better, Began to think — perhaps I shouldn’t have because others began as well.
Feeling anger creeping back in feeling heartache, opening old wounds Feeling pressured to not remain thought all of this was behind me.
Had a dream and wrote it down had a cause and made it clear Had our moment and heard its message now the ice and cold begins to descend.
Fighting visions of four more years fighting bile venting from within Fighting images of burning flags don’t want to go back there again
Was young and angry once before was young and scared, more than I should Found the burden, more than I could hold don’t want to go back there again
Stepped outside and took a breath stepped within and let it out Caught a heartbeat in my hand held it close to understand
Not going back to burning hate not turning back on hope and peace Evil bends with blackened hearts but Hope returns and will restart
Feeling anger slipping out hopelessness taking its final bow How it starts is how it ends Oh, hell no, not again.
