Abstract

y goal in meditating is to live Here and Now, in the Present Moment. And with that understanding, and my lack of ability to truly embody the essence of Being Present through watching my breath through the easiest measurement, I switched my method.

Instead of looking for the easiest avenue, that took the least amount of work for me to do, I decided to take the path that called for me to stay engaged with the subtle nuances of monitoring my inhale and exhale. Hi Notez: The Softest Whisper

If you want the best for yourself, you must be willing to give it your best shot.

Hi Notez: 2/23/24

Even though I’ve been meditating for over 3 years now, not counting guided visualizing meditations, today’s session hit home, practically speaking. If you know anything, and I mean anything, about the mind, then you know it runs incessantly. What did you eat for dinner last week? Your favorite TV show has a new season airing next week. That one thing your coworker did that got under your skin… The topic of choice varies, but the result is always the same. Your mind, and mine for that matter, just won’t shut up.

As a chronic over-thinking intellectualist, how’s that for some big ol’ fancy words, I am constantly engaging in thoughts in one form or another. I write and create art, and these two endeavors, quite typically, require idea generation. I am never short of those. Couple that with being self-aware, and we’ve got all the ingredients to make an overthinking mind pie.

Though generally speaking, the type of thought matters. Most of my thoughts are “positive” in nature. I use that term loosely and relatively. I value the act of creating and as I said previously, ideation is a necessary skill I have honed to be able to create. But what happens when the thoughts my mind generates aren’t helpful, but harmful?

I’ve been stuck there many a time, and I for one, can say, it sucks. Not having your mind be an ally, but in turn, an enemy is deflating and disempowering. But the one thing it took me three years to realize was that whether I like what that voice is telling me, or I despise it, neither of them is actually me. Who I am, or better spoken, the one that is me, is observing. I am the one hearing the thoughts and visualizing the images.

Now that I’ve cleared that up, here is what progressing through today’s session taught me. After being instructed to tool the breath as a point of attention, more specifically, the inhale and exhale in the nostrils, chest, or abdomen, I thought to myself and questioned which of the three was the easiest to focus on.

And then I realized… Much like the loudest person in the room is attention-grabbing, so is the easiest area I could focus on, which for me, is my abdomen. But, being that I’ve done this particular meditation several times, I know it’s just as easy for my mind to dominate that widespread focus, with thoughts that I am easily trapped into identifying with. And because generating ideas takes a sort of “disassociation” from reality, my mind is primed and ready to slip through the cracks of any confines or restrictions I put in place.

So what did I do?

Let me first say. I want to Be mindful. My goal in meditating is to live Here and Now, in the Present Moment. So I can experience today for what it is, not what I thought about myself, or my life when I was a child, 5 years ago, or even yesterday for that matter. While routines and habits can give us the illusion of sameness, I assure you, every day is new.

That for me, was my nose. And instead of just focusing on the breath as it entered and exited my nose, I deepened my experience by feeling the sensation of my nostrils flare and release, each time I inhaled and exhaled.

I’ll be the first to say, I still need practice. But what I’m figuring out, is that this approach, afforded me a closer, more direct way of improving my strength of focus and concentration, which is exactly what I am looking for. This is something I can work on. This, lets me know that easy isn’t always better.

That brings me to today’s Hi Note:

What you seek, is also seeking you.

Don’t be afraid to switch it up, and do so in ways that require more work or consistency from you. True growth comes from testing your capabilities at their best. And if you want the best for yourself, you must be willing to give it your best shot.

It is my goal, to build a community that is Hi Freequency. One that encourages genuine self-expression, imagination, and the pursuit of a life that resonates with individual truths. This can only be done through my best effort in sharing my authentic experience on the road of Self-discovery through Creative Self Mastery… I am not where I want to be yet, but every day I put my best foot forward, is one step closer to realizing that vision. I share these words with appreciation for all of you. As I am attempting to shed light on more of my fellow writers, please read the posts I’ve shared below and let the writers know how their words impact you.

I truly believe the world can change for the better. All we have to do is stick together. Sharing my struggle allows me to create and hold space for you on your journey, no matter what chapter you’re on, we are all writing the story of our lives. Continue to reach out to me. Let’s help each other stay engaged by staying connected.

See you tomorrow!
