Here’s a Fix for Nintendo Switch Joy-Con Drift.

I offer a practical solution for the typical Joy-Con drift on Nintendo Switch consoles.

I have had a Nintendo Switch since 2020, and since then, I have had to buy new Joy-Cons because the joysticks had a lot of stick drift.

In this post, I will discuss the concept of stick drift and introduce this new fix.

What is Stick Drift?

Stick drift is a phenomenon that occurs on gaming controllers, particularly on those with analog sticks, where the controller registers movement on the stick even when the user is not physically moving it.

This can make it difficult to control the character or cursor on the screen and can understandably be very frustrating for all gamers.

What causes Stick Drift?

Stick drift is typically caused by wear and tear on the controller’s components, particularly the analog sticks.

Over time, the plastic on the sticks can become worn down, or the internal components can become loose, which can cause the controller to register movement even when the user is not physically moving the stick.

In some cases, stick drift can also be caused by a malfunction in the controller’s hardware or software. For example, if the controller’s firmware becomes corrupted or outdated, it may not be able to correctly interpret the movement of the analog sticks.

Another cause of stick drift could be dust or dirt accumulation inside the controller, which can cause the internal components to malfunction or become less responsive. This can be particularly common in controllers that are frequently used or have been exposed to dirty or dusty environments.

Additionally, physical damage to the controller, such as accidental drops, water damage, or even just general wear and tear, can also cause stick drift. Once the controller’s internal components become damaged, it can cause the controller to malfunction, and the stick drift may appear.

In any case, the solution to stick drift is to have the controller repaired or replaced. In some cases, it may be possible to clean the controller or replace the analog sticks to fix the problem, but if the controller is severely damaged or worn out, it may need to be replaced.

What is this new fix for Joy-Con stick drift?

Thanks to a report by Gizmodo, a company called GuliKit recently released a replacement/repair kit that can apparently solve this issue for good.

GuliKit has devised a method of making the same switches that it uses in the KingKong Pro 2 controller, which uses Hall effect sensing to reduce physical friction and wear, available for separate purchase.

Although replacing the switches may require some technical know-how, it should be manageable for the average gamer as long as they have the proper tools.

The cost and availability of these switches have yet to be determined. However, the Hall effect sensors for the Steam Deck on Amazon currently cost £30, indicating that they may not be expensive.
