Have A Panic-Free Conversation With Your Children About The Coronavirus
Parents must have a conversation with their kids about the new coronavirus. Here’s how to make this conversation panic-free…
An epidemic can be a scary time for both parents and children. With the WHO (World Health Organization) admitting that coronaviruses are a big problem for the world’s populations, a public health emergency was declared in different parts of the world. The United States, China, Australia, and other countries are being greatly impacted.
So far, hundreds to thousands of cases have been reported in Wuhan, China, and many have been hospitalized in over 190 countries worldwide. In such a situation, it is natural to feel uneasy.
We suggest you take a deep breath and start discussing matters with your children. Many kids are already worried about what is going on, what they know about the pandemic and the daily updates about the new virus. As a parent, you must remember that the impact of such headlines can be negative on your children.
So, you have to have your own life and protect your children from unnecessary depression and anxiety. Take these steps to make things work in a better way.
Be Aware Of Your Own Behavior
It is understandable that parents are concerned nowadays, but this does not mean they should begin shouting at their children or are allowed to misbehave with their teenagers.
Whether you are a parent or a caretaker, you have to understand the consequences of your behavior. If you are visibly upset or react negatively, this will make the children feel bad. They may take cues from your actions, so you have to be aware of your own behavior and speak to them about the outbreak in a friendly and peaceful environment.
Tell Your Children All The Facts
One of the major mistakes parents are making nowadays is that they are not sharing the truth with their kids. Scary headlines attract the attention of children instantly, but they do not always tell the actual fact.
As a parent, it is your duty to share all the facts with your kids as soon as possible and help them avoid direct contact with infected people. You can say things like how many have died in Wuhan so far, how coronaviruses spread or transmit, what are their actual sources, and how to prevent the infection.
Explain What Measures Are Being Taken
In an effort to save the lives of your teenagers and kids, you have to explain what types of efforts are being made in different parts of the world. Fortunately, Chinese authorities had acted quickly, and in the United States and other countries, governments are working to develop a vaccine as early as possible.
Travel in an out of the affected areas is currently restricted, and organizations like the Centers for Disease Control, the World Health Organization, and others are carefully monitoring the situation. All these and other similar things need to be told to your kids so that they can feel better and relaxed. Maybe, they are worried or scary but not able to say it. Or maybe, they are in direct contact with infected individuals and need to be told that such direct contacts can be harmful to their health and life.
Offer Practical Advice
Last but not least, you have to tell your children that the only way to reduce the risk of being infected is to cover their mouth and nose whenever someone sneezes or coughs. In addition, you have to explain that keeping hands and other parts of the body clean is mandatory.
Ideally, you can bring home quality soaps and can ensure that pure drinking water is always available to the whole family. Do not let your teenagers visit pubs, bars or nightclubs because they can be exposed to the virus or the infection
With these things in mind, all parents can save their own lives and the lives of their children. Do your best to keep the concerns to yourself and ensure that your children know that you have the power to protect them.
