Summary

The author has successfully grown a hot mix of microgreens and found them to be a flavorful addition to salads, despite the unexpected outcome of all greens being just green.

Abstract

In early February, the author began an experiment growing microgreens, a popular salad topping known for their flavor and ease of cultivation. The variety chosen was a hot mix containing several types of mustard, kale, and kohlrabi. Although anticipating a colorful mix, the resulting plants were uniformly green, suggesting that possibly only one or two varieties germinated. Despite this, the microgreens were harvested and added to a salad, providing a good, spicy flavor. The author plans to try different mixes in the future and is curious about the possibility of the microgreens regrowing after being cut.

Opinions

  • The author initially expected a colorful variety of microgreens but ended up with uniformly green plants, suspecting that not all seed varieties germinated.
  • Despite the lack of color, the author was pleased with the flavor of the microgreens, describing them as spicy and surprisingly potent for their size.
  • The author intends to continue experimenting with growing microgreens, expressing interest in trying new mixes.
  • There is an optimistic view on the potential for the microgreens to regrow after the initial harvest, which would extend their use.

Growing Microgreens-Final Verdict

They Are a Great Addition to Salads

In early February I wrote an article titled Growing Microgreens. As I wrote in that story, microgreens are popular as a topping for salads, and for adding to sandwiches or wraps. They are flavorful and delicious. As I found out, they are also easy to grow.

The variety I grew is a hot mix and contains Mustard Purple Wave, Mustard Mizuna Line Streaked, Mustard Tatsoi, Kale Red Ursa, and Kohlrabi Purple Vienna.

In my second article, The Microgreens Have Sprouted, I indicated that the seeds germinated, and I was on my way to a successful experiment involving these tiny greens. I also gave some information on how to buy seeds.

They were supposed to be colorful as well, but mine ended up being just green. I have a feeling that maybe all of the varieties didn’t germinate, since the plants all looked identical. Perhaps just one or two of the varieties germinated.

However, the end result was good. I was able to harvest them and add them to a salad. The flavor was good, a little spicy as promised. I was surprised how much flavor the tiny plants had.

I will definitely try them again in the future. I would like to try some different mixes to see what happens. In the meantime, I will use what I have grown (2 containers), and also see if they re-grow after cutting enough to be cut again.
