Welcome August!

We are all looking forward to the Medium Day Celebration happening on August 12th.

I have planned a lovely writing challenge for our community in the spirit of Medium Day celebrations. The more we celebrate, the more we come together. The more we come together, the more we grow.

Welcome to the August writing challenge! It features four distinct prompts, each designed to ignite your creative spirit. Let’s engage and participate to make it big!

Prompt 1. Colour Yellow.

Let’s close our eyes and think about all the rainbow colours.

Which colour comes to your mind first? The colour I have picked for you from the rainbow today is colour yellow. In nature’s colour palette, yellow has great prominence. Yellow compliments well with the verdant green of nature.

The bright yellow morning rays kissing the golden yellow paddy fields,

Green mustard farms melting into a yellow haze of tiny mustard flowers,

A tiny weaver bird fluttering and showing its yellow belly,

The charm of Grandma’s golden yellow antique neckpiece!

Yellow is a royal vibrant colour.

‘’Colour is an amazing phenomenon. It is around us all the time and influences everything we do -though we are barely aware that this is happening. In fact, we are only around 20 percent conscious of the colour decision that we make, though we make them all the time: about what we wear, what we eat, what we buy, how we relax, right down to how we take our morning cup of coffee’’

Friends, If the colour yellow inspires you, write a story about it and share it with Reader’s Hope.

Prompt 2. My comfort Food.

I’m sure we all have that one food that brings us that dopamine and serotonin fix after a long, exhausting day!

‘’ The best comfort food will always be greens, cornbread, and fried chicken ‘’ — Maya Angelou

Sounds delicious!

Who doesn’t love a cheesy melting-in-the-mouth pizza right out of a wood-fired oven? In fact, right now I can hitchhike a 2hours drive to Lonavala, a hill station near my home to get cozy with a wood fire pizza. But home is where the heart is! I can be content with a plate loaded with warm idlis and spicy coconut chutney. Or a bowl of steaming kanji made with broken brown rice accompanied by a piece of mango pickle and roasted papad can assuage my heart on any frigging tired day! My son loves a dozen burgers and no talk on weekends.

Friends, which food is spelled like ‘’comfort ‘’in your Dictionary?

Looking forward to hearing it straight from the horse’s mouth. Share your story in Reader’s Hope.

Prompt 3. Write a micro-fiction of your choice.

Let’s flex our fiction-telling muscles.

A micro-fiction is a brief narrative that typically consists of approximately 100 words. Our Chief Editor of ILLUMINATION, the owner Dr Mehmet Yildiz recently gave us writing tips on Creative Non-fiction writing. Check out this go-to guide for creative nonfiction writing.

I have edited a piece of microfiction for you quickly.

Ram‘s Beguiling Smile

Ram gave his gummy smile showing his uneven teeth when I served him hot dosas right from the hot ‘dosakkallu’ topped with reheated sambar left over from breakfast. It was past 12.30 am. I kept on making dosas. Two at a time. His elder brother Bala looked at him lovingly. As the young teenager wiped off the plate, I felt a deep joy in my heart, even though it was an unworldly time at night to cook. I added a spoonful of Bourn Vita to a glass of warm sweetened milk and gave it to Raman. He smiling drank the milk.

“You’re making him feel like a child.”

I chose not to respond to my husband’s comment.

I coerced the young lad to have a cup of ‘Payasam’ to top up the sumptuous midnight meal.

He drank that also, now with signs of strain. But for his age, I guessed he could digest the meal. Bala and Ram were working till late at night at our home to complete the decorations for a Puja which was to be held the next morning.

I was curious to learn more about the young boy.

‘Ram, you must be having sisters at home?’’

He continued to give his shy smile.

At this point, Bala interfered.

‘’He grew up with his Grandparents. He only has a younger brother at home.’’

I stopped my questions. I knew it would hurt the young boy.

Now, I was feeling grateful I served him motherly love and he received it happily!

To you, my lovely friends! I hope you enjoyed reading my microfiction as much as I did writing it.

Your turn now! Weave a small story!

Share your micro fiction to Reader’s Hope.
