SELF IMPROVEMENT

Greatness vs. Difficulty: Which Destiny Will You Choose?

How to use self-discipline as a fail-proof plan.

“Don’t miss out on something that could be great just because it could also be difficult.” — Unknown

If you are anything like me, starting something is the most difficult part.

It’s easy to let our minds categorize tasks as ‘too difficult or even ‘impossible.’

This leads us down a difficult path. No rewards — instead, constant worry and wonder of what could have been.

For example - A writer beginning to write on Medium may see the plethora of work that lies ahead of them.

They understand successful writers must build a relationship with their audience. This requires consistent writing, reading, commenting, clapping and reciprocity.

Potential greatness

- Successful writing on Medium

- Helping others improve

- Building meaningful relationships

Potential difficulties

- Writing for free

- Time consuming

- Fear of judgement

This is when you ask yourself: How desperately do I want to write? How badly do I want the truth from my perspective to be heard?

If you truly want to accomplish something, think of it as more of a commitment rather than an option. This leads you on the greatness path.

Commit to starting and don’t stop.

In my opinion, the best way to continue the process is self-discipline.

Merriam-Webster defines self-discipline as

“correction or regulation of oneself for the sake of improvement”

Essentially, self-discipline is you against you.

It is knowing and believing the hard work you put in will result in something great. Having faith the rewards will come.

Self-discipline is consistently choosing greatness, despite any difficulties.

Just go through the motions. You already know what you’re doing will result in great things, so keep that faith. Use that hope to fuel your passion!

Another example - A person who wants to go to the gym must decide whether it’s worth the 15 minute drive to the gym.

There may be traffic, which consumes more of their precious time.

The person knows going to the gym will be great for them, but the matter of getting there, or starting, poses a level of difficulty.

How badly does the person want to keep this commitment?

This answer determines how successful the person is in achieving greatness — their reward for putting in the work.

Use discipline and the potential for greatness to fuel your passion.

You know the benefits and greatness are coming.

So keep it up! We can accomplish anything we set our minds to :)
