Yesterday I published an FAQ article. Medium can be a confusing place sometimes and we were all newbies once. Even as a non-newbie though, I learn new things about Medium all the time! So hopefully this will help clear up some of the confusion.

Medium Rules vs. Distribution Standards
Did you know that there is a big difference between Medium rules and Medium distribution standards?
Glancing through Medium rules you will see that it tends to cover more serious issues like harassment and content no-nos.
Medium distribution goes well beyond this and gets into the all-too-often murky subject of “quality”.
“If one of your goals is for your story to be shared across Medium’s network, concentrate on quality and ensure that your work meets our distribution standards.”
Furthermore, there’s a handy list of dos and don’ts here:
Self-publishing articles and publishing articles in a publication are two very different things. When self-publishing, you are in complete control and can get away with a lot more tomfoolery. When publishing in many publications, you will encounter editors who try their best to follow both Medium rules and Medium distribution standards.
As a writer on Medium, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with both the rules and distribution standards. No it’s not always easy. My personal weakness is publishing stories about writing on Medium, even though Medium doesn’t like it when writers write about writing on Medium (never quite understood this as I find it a completely fascinating subject).
I do try to be good, but one of these articles sneaks out of me from time to time. I do know that it will not get distributed and I know better than to submit it to a publication, other than maybe like Feedium.
