Gary Rolfe’s Model of Reflection — What, So What, Now What
A reflective model that works well to introspect a specific event or situation
In this article, I explain Rolfe’s model of reflection and share a templated list of questions to reflect upon.
Using reflective analysis, when an event occurs, a description of a situation is given, which then leads to the scrutiny of the situation and the construction of knowledge which has been learnt through the experience.
This model works well for reflecting on a particular (specific) incident/event/situation.
Below, I have collated questions about each phase of Rolfe’s model, that can be useful to analyze your situation/event.
- What Past — Describe what happened - What occurred? - What did you do about it? - What was the effect of my action? - What was my role in the situation? - What was the response of others? - What actions did I take? - What feelings did it evoke? - What was good/bad about this experience? - What did I learn?
- So What Present — Gain an understanding of what happened - So what does this tell me about my actions? - So what was the effect of my practice? - So what should I have done? - So what was going through my mind as I acted? - So what did I base my actions on? - So what other knowledge can I bring to this situation? - So what could I have done to make it better? - So what is my new understanding of the situation? - So what other issues arise from the situation?
- Now What Future — Identify the decision on the changes you need to make - Now what would I do differently the next time? - Now what would be the consequences of these changes? - Now what do I need to do to feel better? - Now what other issues need to be considered if this action is to be successful? - Now what planning is required to activate the new direction?

I have used this model in Team Retrospectives, Brainstorming, Incident Reviews, and also in a couple of 1–2–1’s. Let me know, how you use it.
