TBIN SEPTEMBER INTERVIEW
From My Dandruff to My Toenails
More tidbits about me

What do you love most about the experience of writing?
Where do I start?!
My answer is threefold; first, I love how writing has rekindled old memories that I had completely forgotten about. Being able to revisit and share them is extremely cathartic, whether they were happy or sad ones.
Second, I love reading other writer’s stories. I am inspired by their words and learn something about life, them and writing every time I click on a piece.
Third, I enjoy the sense of community here on Medium. I feel the love, the connection and the support oozing from every writer I have encountered. It motivates me to keep at it.
What’s your favourite candy?
Licorice! When I was small, a relative whom we nicknamed The Licorice Man, used to always arrive with bags of it. To be honest I don’t even know what side of the family he was from or if he was even a blood relative. But we loved him visiting. Aside from making your teeth go black, it is one of my absolute faves, especially licorice allsorts and straps — the fresher, the better. Yummy!
What’s the story behind one of your scars?
That headliner pic is definitely not my foot…
I have a large scar on my right foot because I had bunion surgery — twice. It’s a genetic problem passed down through my mother’s side of the family. Ever since I was a kid my foot — just one — was deformed and it was hell-bent on working its way inwards. Gross!
I was tired of having one weird looking foot so had the operation 6 years ago — but it didn’t work, so had it done again 3 years later. It still isn’t perfect but better than what it was. At least it stops me from buying lots of shoes as I have a hard time finding comfortable ones that camouflage it.
What is something you can never seem to finish?
My to-do list. I love lists; they keep me focused and goal-orientated but as soon as I cross off things, several more end up on them. I have a grocery list, a weekly list, a long-term list, a writing topic list…the list goes on!
What would you do on a free afternoon in the middle of the week?
Um …write!
Faves?
- Favourite item in your bathroom? My hair straightener — and I honestly don’t have dandruff. Sorry, is that considered clickbait?
- Favourite kind of pen? A fine tip ballpoint. It sounds dumb but every time I go back to NZ I always stock up on my Bic Flik ballpoints — mainly because they are unique and nurses/teachers are famous for ‘stealing’ pens! They can’t get away with it as I know it’s mine 😋
- Favourite sound? Gentle lapping or thunderous crashing of waves on the shore
- Favourite furniture store? I’m with you on this one Lucy! Ikea — it’s reasonably priced and stylish.
- Favourite plant? Lilac — it looks so pretty and smells divine.
Articles to share
I based all my choices on my August writings.
Your top piece last month: this one was a bit of a surprise as it was fictional. 100% read ratio — I was thrilled!
A piece that deserves more love: always plugging my daughter because she looks different but the most beautiful soul — inside and out.
A piece that starts with the letter A: I had 5 to choose from! I was disappointed I had few reads on this one — are we not thankful for these guys/gals?
A piece that is less than 3 minutes: I have oodles being a regular on The Daily Cuppa, but this was a fave of mine, written in jest of not being allowed to enter the Medium contest.
A poem: I actually wrote several last month, but my beautiful baby girl wins. RIP Ed Ted. ❤
Thanks so much, Lucy Dan 蛋小姐 (she/her/她) for another inspiring challenge. Can’t wait to see everyone else's!
