For New Content Writers: Please the Take Advice That You Read Online Lightly

You’re not going to get the same results in a short amount of time.

Like you, I have read tons of articles on writing. They can range from how to get 1,000 followers a week to how to make $1,000 right off the bat.

I have also read from those authors who are more realistic when it comes to writing. They know that you can’t make a huge amount of money or get countless followers in a short amount of time. Likewise, I prefer to pay attention to the realists than those who claim that you can automatically get the results that you want just by blogging, using sites like Medium, or joining newsletter subscription sites like Substack.

The truth is, can you really sell anything online? Not everyone is a great salesperson. Some of us suck at it. But it does take time to learn to do that. Not within a week or a month, but it can take years.

Some Tactics

I have tried tactics (mentioned in other blogs here) like copy and pasting my Medium articles to Vocal and my own website. However, the writers who suggested those forgot about two things: Google Analytics and AdSense.

I have tried to copy and paste one of my articles onto Vocal, only to have it rejected. Whoever recommended that forgot that Vocal workers do research to see if the article was already on some other platform. The big reason why they rejected mine might have to do with plagiarism. There could be something else that has to do with their guidelines too. But somehow, they let other writers get their already published blogs onto Vocal. I don’t know why?

The reason why I mentioned Google Analytics is that I read another blog that mentions that it’s not a good idea to copy and paste articles from one site to another. It will confuse the algorithm. I can’t explain more than that because I don’t know much about Google Analytics SEO. It is best to have totally different articles on all the different writing platforms you are on.

As for Google AdSense, I did put some of my Medium articles into my own blog. When I wanted to join AdSense, I got a warning about not to include repeated content on there. So, I deleted all those posts and wrote a new one. Then I got accepted to Google AdSense.

I have been on Medium since September and I haven’t gotten paid past $5 yet. But I am still on this platform because it is addicting, and I don’t have to bother any of my social media followers to read or to buy into whatever scheme that I am supposed to follow.

I am also a podcaster for seven years and I still haven’t gotten up to 5,000 listeners yet. I’ve only gotten as much as 1,200 on one episode. The majority of the time its 200 to 500 listeners a week. I know of two fellow podcasters who took many years until 2020 to get a million listeners for their show. And they’ve been at it a lot longer than I have.

My Failed Attempts at Selling Started When I was Young.

This reminds me of when I was a kid in the 80s. My elementary school at the time decided to hold a Spell-A-Thon. The only way that the school had to raise money for this was for all of us students to go door to door asking for pledges. Unfortunately, all I got from doing that was $0, and I wasn’t even a good speller back then.

I hated to do that every year since because that means that I had to go from door to door begging for money only to get nothing and avoiding houses with no soliciting signs on the front door.

I was also in girl guides, so I had to do the same thing when selling cookies. At that time, those maple flavored cookies tasted horrible to me (I am glad that they changed that recipe). There were a few people who did buy a few boxes, but I would still get the same response from other neighbors as with the Spell-A-Thon.

And now you know why you see Boy Scouts or Girl Guides sitting behind a table inside the front entrance of every supermarket or grocery store selling cookies or chocolate bars today.

My point with these two stories is that not many people are good at selling something.

If you have tried all of them like I have, unsuccessfully, then you might have to figure out how to get more followers or to make money doing so on your own. That’s what I am trying to figure out right now. Besides, people love those content writers who are more authentic on the internet. Maybe that is the key to getting more followers and money, who knows? But it will not take you a week or a month, but years to get the results that you want.

I just read an article from someone who took two years to get their blog to make money. I even read one where a blogger took a decade to make $1,000. Now that is determination.

So now you see the reality of writing online. It’s not going to make you instantly rich and popular. That’s why I want you to take all those claims lightly. It’s best to determine what will give you success on your own. Otherwise, do your own thing, and you will be happy. That’s the real secret to success.
