Summary

The article discusses the concept of feminism and its relevance in contemporary society, using the example of Noonoouri, a CGI influencer, to explore the complexities of equal opportunity and allyship.

Abstract

The piece titled "Feminism (Friend or Foe?)" delves into the nuanced understanding of feminism and equal opportunity, emphasizing that while many feminists advocate for equal opportunities for women, there is still a need to address underlying sexist attitudes. It defines equal opportunity as non-discriminatory treatment in employment, pay, and promotion and describes an ally as someone who supports and helps another, particularly in the face of opposition. The article introduces Noonoouri, a virtual fashionista, and scrutinizes the decision by Warner Music Central Europe to exclude women from her debut single, contrasting this with the definition of an ally. Despite the potential for virtual influencers like Noonoouri to be seen as threats to women's representation, the article concludes that she is not an existential threat, providing a satirical set of multiple-choice answers to illustrate the point.

Opinions

  • The author suggests that feminism is necessary to address misconceptions about equal opportunity, such as the expectation of praise for basic acts of gender equality.
  • The article implies that true allies support and uplift those they align with, which may not be the case with Noonoouri's creation and promotion by men, despite her female persona.
  • There is a critical view of Warner Music Central Europe's choice to use men for Noonoouri's debut single, highlighting the irony in the context of feminism and equal opportunity.
  • The author uses satire to question the societal norms and expectations surrounding feminism and women's roles, particularly in the entertainment industry.
  • The article subtly criticizes the lack of women's involvement in Noonoouri's musical project, suggesting that the situation is emblematic of broader issues in gender equality.

Many feminists believe equal opportunity improves life chances for women. However a feminist might end up saying to a sexist, “No, equal opportunity is not you sometimes doing the dishes and expecting to be thanked for it,” thus illustrating the need for feminism.

What is equal opportunity?

“Equal opportunity refers to the policy of giving everyone the same opportunities for employment, pay, and promotion, without discriminating against particular groups.” — Collins Dictionary

What is an ally?

“If you describe someone as your ally, you mean that they help and support you, especially when other people are opposing you.” — Collins Dictionary

Who is Noonoouri?

“Noonoouri is a cartoony, 19-year-old fashionista hailing from Munich, Germany. She has worked with most of the top brands in the fashion industry and continues to wow consumers with her unique look.” — virtualhumans.org

Noonoouri is a digital character. Warner Music Central Europe has given her a record deal.

Noonoouri was created by CGI influencer (not a real job), Joerg Zuber. Brother Zuber, showing his commitment to his creation, also decided how she should walk. Wearing high heels, essential.

For her debut single, ‘Dominoes,’ Warner Music Central Europe chose not to employ…. What are they called again? It’s on the tip of me tongue. They’re over half the population. Oh, that’s it. Women. So, instead of using women as singer and songwriters, Warner Music Central Europe chose men.

Her debut track was written and recorded by “talented songwriters and musicians”, the company said.

According to the Press Association, the writers and singers will receive royalties and publishing splits just like for any traditional song.

Well, that’s alright then.

Feminism and womanly stuff can be very complicated. However, luckily for me, a very wise person once said, “It is a truth universally acknowledged that everything is shit easy to understand when reduced to multiple choice with no wrong answers.”

The Question: Why is Noonoouri not an existential threat to women?

The Answers:
