Even Major Game Developers Are Using AI Tools.
Ubisoft is making an AI Ghostwriter for use when writing their game narratives.

According to a recent video presentation, Ubisoft has created an AI tool called Ghostwriter to help narrative designers write barks for NPCs in their games. Barks are lines spoken by non-playable characters after a trigger occurs, such as a change in the environment or character interaction, that help bring the game world to life.
Ghostwriter aims to reduce the tedium of writing these quips by providing the narrative team with a first draft of barks.
The way Ghostwriter works is that writers create a character and then input “an event or situation” for the character to experience.
The tool then generates different variations of a bark, depending on the mode selected. Writers can further edit these generated lines, and Ghostwriter also learns from each selected line that the writer accepts.
“Ghostwriter was created hand-in-hand with narrative teams to help them complete a repetitive task more quickly and effectively, giving them more time and freedom to work on games’ narrative, characters, and cutscenes,” Ubisoft says in its Ghostwriter introduction video.
ChatGPT and other AI tools in game development have recently sparked controversy, with concerns over how these tools will shape the future of game development and life in general. However, Ubisoft is not alone in its use of AI tools.
Roblox has also announced the development of AI tools, such as a material generator and a code assist feature, at the Game Developer’s Conference, which is meant to make it easier for Roblox developers to create games. Similarly, Squanch Games has utilized Midjourney to create set decorations for High on Life.
In related AI news, Google released its ChatGPT rival Bard to the public. Currently, access to the tool requires applying and getting on a waitlist. Bard functions similarly to ChatGPT in that it can respond to users on various topics. Google has stated that Bard is an “early experiment,” as told to Wired.
While the use of AI tools in game development has sparked controversy, many argue that these tools can be valuable to game developers, allowing them to complete repetitive tasks more quickly and effectively while freeing up more time to focus on the creative aspects of game development.
For example, Ghostwriter could generate barks for NPCs, freeing up the narrative team to work on more complex dialogue and character development.
Despite the potential benefits of AI tools in game development, concerns have also been raised regarding the impact of AI on the creative process. Some argue that using AI tools may lead to homogenizing game content, as AI-generated content may lack the creativity and uniqueness of content created by human writers.
Additionally, there are concerns that using AI tools may reduce the number of human jobs in the game development industry.
