Essential Services

Barbers open, staunch.

We don’t have it, we just know.

Silent, death chair waits.

Businesses deemed ‘essential services’ — allowed to stay open during lockdowns trying to stop the spread of COVID-19 — vary between countries.

Likewise, enforcement and sanctions.

Some businesses defy orders to close and, asked why, sometimes reply that their staff have no symptoms.

Trouble is, people may have the virus, and transmit it to others, without showing any symptoms for days, or weeks, and sometimes never.

That, after all, is the point of lockdowns, to stop transmission, whether you have it, or not. Until symptoms appear, confirmed by testing, no-one can say they don’t have the virus.

Belief to the contrary is, quite simply, irrelevant. And strident belief demonstrates only ignorance, arrogance, or both.

I don’t know of any studies in support, but it seems a reasonable hypothesis that people with such beliefs might be more likely to have the virus than the general populace. People unconcerned with evidence, or disconnected with common sense, may be less likely to take sensible precautions.

Either way, the virus doesn’t care. Literally.
