Abstract

The author of the website content is working on an extension to enrich Medium's stats page with more detailed earnings information. This extension aims to provide a more comprehensive view of an author's performance by integrating earnings data directly into the stats page. The author has shared a sneak preview of the new features, which include color-coded statistics for daily, monthly, and lifetime earnings, as well as a redesigned layout that groups related items for easier processing. The extension also introduces a new way of presenting reading time data instead of the number of reads. While the author is excited about these improvements, they acknowledge that the extension is still a work in progress and seek feedback from users to refine the features. The article also mentions the contributions of individuals like Anthony Lawrence (Pcunix) and The Secret Aspirant, who have provided valuable input and assistance in the development process.

Enriching Your Stats With Money

Coming soon. Ish…

Nothing beats looking at your accomplishments on Medium’s stats page. Or maybe there is something… How about an enhanced stats-page? I know there are a couple of great extension out there that do just that. Recently, I took the plunge and went ahead with extending my earnings extension to extend the stats-page.

Boy, is he happy! He must be waiting for something good… Professional man photo created by drobotdean — www.freepik.com

Sneak Preview — Feedback Appreciated

Sadly I can’t spend as much time on Medium or on coding as I want to, but in my rare spare time I have managed to crank out something that may or may not hit the next iteration of the Earnings extension.

Christmas is coming early this year. Screenshot by me.

As you can see in the screenshot above, I am trying to incorporate earnings into the stats page. And as I was happily crafting away, I thought I’d make some other adjustments as well. You might even call them improvements.

The stuff I am doing with the extension is wildly different from what the extension normally does. Let me know whether you like this direction.

A Legend

I don’t want to imply that anything by me is legendary. I just want to provide a legend to the screenshot. What were you thinking?

  • Green — Today’s stats
  • Blue — This month’s stats
  • Black — Lifetime stats

See? Nothing legendary here. Except for the legend of course.

Using it is more intuitive. You can hover over the items to get an explanation. Or, if you didn’t get my non-legendary legend, take a look at the image in the next paragraph. It’s got arrows.

Feedback is highly appreciated. So? Do you like what you’re seeing? I must admit I had some trouble with deciding how to do the layout. Grouping the three items made a lot of sense to me, but that gives so much data to process I added some colours.

The rejects. I tried a couple of things. Glad I settled on the one I showed earlier? Screenshot by me.

Other Improvements

I should be a graphic designer! Screenshot by me.

The other improvements are hard to miss. But I thought to include a helpful image just in case. Why? Well, because you have the opportunity to feed me some feedback on it!

The views are pretty straightforward, but it becomes interesting at the second column.

I got rid of the number of reads

— my stats any given weekday

I mean: I removed the number of reads from the column and replaced it with something that tells me a lot more: how much time has someone spend on actually reading my story?

The views is right next to it, so I’ll have a general idea. If I really want to know, I can hover over the read times to get the actual number.

Claps, fans, ratio’s. I wasn’t sure what to do with those, so those columns remain unchanged. That might be better for legibility of all the additional data that is coming at ya now.

But who knows what the future holds.

I can’t even predict what I’ll be having for dinner tomorrow. And I am doing both the shopping and the cooking. It’s nigh impossible to guess how progress on the extension looks like.

That metaphor wasn’t helpful? Ok, I’ll try and be clear.

When is this coming?

I don’t know. I might remove the features if I don’t like it. You see a rough version here. I am not totally happy with how it looks and I want to change quite a number of things on how things are looking under the hood at the moment.

Also. It works on my machine.

But it doesn’t work on Anthony Lawrence (Pcunix)’s computer. He has been kind enough to give a very early alpha a spin, but the extension failed spectacularly. Thanks, Anthony!

The chief editor at What’s up, The Secret Aspirant, has been of great assistance as well. He provided me some well thought out mockups and very clever words of inspiration. Thanks! I really appreciate our little chats!

Feedback, please!

Before I forget: the point of this little story was to get feedback on how you think this feature is progressing? Should I ditch it? Adjust it? Leave it as is? Let me know!

Didimo Grimaldo had a great suggestion on slack today. I checked into it, but I am pretty sure it was impossible. That didn’t prevent him from suggesting it, thanks, D!

Oh, yeah, getting to the point. Feedback please! You know where to find that comment-button.

What is this all about?

Now you ask! Better late than never, right?

If you’re unfamiliar with my extensions, I suggest you check here for the latest versions:

I am pretty sure that some of the stories behind these links will explain what the extensions do.
