Embracing the Joys of Winter

As the seasons change, so do the seasons of life

As we enjoy the last of autumn and the trees are now mostly barren, I can honestly say I am mentally prepared for winter. I feel completely different this year than I have in the past. Typically, I resist winter for the long nights, dreary days, and bitterly cold temperatures. The last few holiday seasons have been challenging due to ending my marriage and then engaging in unstable relationships. This year, I feel a shift.

Thanksgiving Realization

My daughter and I flew “home” from our perspective cities to my mom’s house, where I was born and raised, for Thanksgiving week. My son still lives in Cincinnati, as does the rest of my family. Thanksgiving is my daughter’s favorite holiday and used to be one of mine too, until the drama the last several years.

I am so glad I obliged and bought the ticket home. This year was a small family gathering. We cooked together, played games, took walks, and watched movies. It was completely different than in the past. There was zero tension or drama — just enjoyment and love.

Following the Pace of Nature

So, as the trees shed their leaves, I, too, have shed what no longer serves me. I have let go of the emotional shackles that held me back. I feel much more lighthearted heading into this winter season than I have in the past.

“Adopt the pace of nature. Her secret is patience.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

I have patiently been healing and doing my own self-study. My family could see how happy I am now. I will feel good returning to Arizona, knowing they are no longer worried about me. Don’t get me wrong — we are family; we all worry a little about each other, but they know I am in a good place mentally and emotionally.

Just as the seasons change, we too change each year. Life is passing us by quickly. Winter gives us a chance to slow down and embrace where we are on the journey.

How to Enjoy the Comfort of Winter

Being from Arizona and visiting Cincinnati in late November is a big weather change. It is downright cold here in the Midwest. But, I have learned to adapt and embrace where I am. Knowing I would be cold, my mom bought me a new warm, soft, cozy blanket. It is super nice.

Having a warm fire in the fireplace and watching heartwarming movies is a great way to cope with winter blues. Eating comfort foods high in fat, sugar, and carbs makes us feel better by triggering dopamine in the brain — the “feel good” chemical.

As hard as it is to leave my family, I do look forward to returning to my Sonoran Desert. Although I still face winter, seeing the sunshine and blue sky daily helps. Being able to swim outdoors in the heated pool or take a dip under the stars in the hot tub is definitely good for my soul.

Final Thoughts

Life is evolving. Once I looked fear in the eyes and took a leap of faith toward my dreams, everything started improving. The universe heard me and is conspiring to make my dreams come true. I know I am wrapping up 2023 on a good note to prepare for a beautiful 2024.

I am starting new traditions while holding old memories close to my heart. When I get home, I will decorate for Christmas. Although I will miss decorating with my kids, life changes, and I have learned I must not resist those changes. Instead, I will make the best of it, and I know they will, too.

I look forward to brisk evening walks and seeing all the winter lights and decorations. I look forward to the Scottsdale Enchanted Christmas Maze Lights Display And The Zoo Lights at The Phoenix Zoo. There is so much to see and do in the winter if I embrace a good attitude. It is much easier now that the anger and frustration has dissipated. Christmas’s festive lights and spirit will warm my heart and soul and take me to an even higher level of renewal.

Winter is a time of rest, so we can rise renewed come springtime. I hope you enjoy this winter regardless of your favorite season. Embrace where we are in the here and now.
