Earning Back the Membership Fee on Medium
How I earned $5 in a month and tips on how you can do it too!

Before telling you my story, I wanted to thank everyone for reading these words and for every single comment and clap!
Special thanks to my email subscribers Francisco Iglesias and Alejandra Landa!
I’m sincerely grateful to all of you!
Not too long ago, I wrote an article about earning my first pennies on Medium.
That was when I had been writing on Medium for almost one month…
And right before I saw that, the $0.14 (which I had been so happy about!) suddenly turned into a whole number at the front!
Whaaaat?!
I couldn’t believe my eyes when I suddenly saw a number in front of the dot: $5.35?!
How could that be?!
Was I dreaming?
Getting straight to numbers, these were the statistics for my individual stories:

As you can tell, the article “Earning my first pennies” had the most views and reads by far.
This is again shown in my Medium current statistics of all-time views:

The key date here is the 9th of March.
This was the day I published the article Earning my First Pennies on Medium and I received the most views on the day I published that article.
Just one day after earning $0.14, that article blew up (compared to my other stories).
What’s important is that the $5 did not entirely come from that article.
Almost half of the $5 came from another source: a referred membership (More about this topic below!)

Here are some tips for you to earn back the membership fee (and even more) on Medium:
Write, write, write
One key to success on Medium is consistency.
The more articles you publish, the higher the exposure to your audience.
However, it’s not necessarily the number of articles written but the consistency — you can set a goal to write, e.g., 3 articles a week, and work to achieve this goal.
I’ve also been trying to write more consistently on Medium, but it isn’t easy due to my studies and everything around it! I’m sure many of you can relate…
Publishing in publications is also a great way to broaden your audience!

Cover the right topics & bring value to the reader
Medium calculates revenue for an article through READING TIME.
Meaning that even if you have an exciting or interesting title, the content of your articles and how engaging it is throughout the piece matters a lot!
Here’s where quality over quantity is essential!
Write about topics that interest you and that you have a passion for!
This makes writing about them much more straightforward than forcing yourself to write about a topic you’re not interested in but think others would like.
Engage with the audience
Medium is a great community to be part of.
Therefore, it is crucial to read, comment and clap for others!
If your loyal followers comment on one of your posts, respond genuinely to their comments!
I’ve gotten to know many friendly people on this platform, for which I’m truly thankful! Every comment has touched me profoundly, and at first, I was so surprised that anyone would even read and let alone comment on my writing!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Referred memberships
As you saw above, I earned $2.27 from a referred membership!
If you’re unfamiliar with the term, here’s a short explanation: participants of the Medium Partner Program can earn money through reading time and referred memberships. For example, you get a commission if someone becomes a Medium premium member by clicking your specific referral link.
For the new member, it doesn’t make a difference in the payment amount — they pay the same amount of $5/month.
You can include your referral link in your articles and/or about page to get referred memberships.
If you can’t read all articles on Medium yet and want to become a premium member, I’d be infinitely grateful to you if you use my referral link by clicking here. There’s no additional fee for you, and you would support me directly :)

At this point, I’d like to thank my new followers:
