Drop That Dumbbell, Take This Pill! The Future of Exercising Is Pharmaceutical
And yes, it is a dream come true.
Since the dawn of time, waking up before the sun to exercise has always been a form of pure pain and self-inflicted torture for the ones who want a thin body.
It’s 5 AM and the first thing you do is take your alarm-blasting phone and hurl it across the room while hating your life. You have to (but don’t want to) wake up and go for a morning jog that will end at the gym where you continue with dumbbells, lunges, Smith machine, etc. The usual.
While you drag your body out of bed and into your jogging shoes, there is just one thought in your head: ‘Nooooooo!’ Continued by: ‘Couldn’t there just be a pill instead of exercising?’
Well, apparently there could.
According to an article published in the journal Nature, a team of 29 researchers from the Stanford School of Medicine and Baylor College of Medicine, identified a very useful molecule that is produced in the blood during exercise.
This molecule can reduce appetite and prevent obesity. It is called Lac-Phe and more extensive testing has only been conducted on rodents thus far.
Doesn’t it just make you want to be a lab rat?
The findings up to now:
- the molecule suppresses food intake with about 50%
- there is no loss of stamina, decreased mobility or energy
- improved glucose tolerance
- reduced appetite
- improved metabolic rate
- reduced body weight (even when administered for just 10 days)
As to what type of exercise produces the biggest quantities of Lac-Phe in your blood, and consequently the biggest benefits, here’s top 3, in that order:
- sprint exercise (try Hight Intensity Interval Training)
- resistance training (aka weights)
- endurance training (such as jogging)
While the research is still in early phases, the hope is to be able to jam the same spectacular benefits of strenuous exercise into a pill that requires no gym memberships and no sweat. Zero strain, zero effort, zero fat, what a perfect world we’d live in. Shut up and take my money!
