WRITING

Don’t Cry — Here’s How To Publish A Story Every Day (Even If You Work Full-Time)

I work full-time and here’s how I can still publish stories on a consistent basis.

I started on Medium in January 2022. Since then, I’ve modified my publishing schedule a few times. At the very beginning, I published a post every day. I saw the results, so I decided to publish about 2–3 stories a day.

Then one of my readers mentioned that publishing so much wasn’t necessary. The danger of burnout was also there. I realized that the only thing that was necessary was being consistent. If you can only dedicate two posts per week, then so be it.

The key is to stay consistent.

Although I have been experimenting a bit this month with my posting schedule, I’ve decided to stick to publishing one story a day.

Is it difficult for you to do this? If so, take a look at these tips I use to make sure I’m on top of my schedule. With my set posting schedule now, I won’t let a day go by without a story posted!

① Binge-Write for A Day

Dedicate one day to create a stash of drafts. I aim for about 8–10 if possible. That means you are already a week ahead! Some people also find it useful to chunk time. If this works for you, dedicate a time frame in your calendar and build your treasure of drafts.

② A Little Bit Adds Up!

Write a little bit each day. You’ll need to experiment a little with this. Are you able to write anywhere and anytime? That means you can write if you are waiting for your appointment. Squeeze out a sentence or two.

For me, I alternate between dedicated time and sporadic times. If I’m waiting in line for my food and it’s taking a long time, I might whip out my phone and write a few lines. It all adds up!

③ Short Stories Are Great!

Make use of short form stories. You don’t have to churn out a 5 minute story if you don’t have time. Stories that are 1 minute long also count! You can deliver an important message throughout short form too. It doesn’t have to be an essay.

④ Always Have A Surplus

If you publish one story, add two more drafts. Even if the story isn’t complete, write a few important points and go back to it later. At least you’ll have the idea jotted down and can update it when you have more time. Don’t let your drafts dwindle! It’s hard to start from zero.

⑤ Keep An Eye On When Your Post Is Published

I usually submit to a publication. However, if I see that my story isn’t published for a long time, I’ll self-publish one immediately instead. It’s true that I might end up with multiple posts per day.

But at least something is out. I also won’t submit to more than one publications at once. I don’t want a whole whack of stories to suddenly be published in one day!

⑥ Take Advantage of the Self-Publishing Feature!

Speaking of self-publishing, make sure to take advantage of the scheduled self-publishing feature. Are you going on vacation? Do you know you’ll be caught up with other things on the weekend? Use the self-publishing feature to schedule stories on specific days and times. You won’t ever miss a publishing day!

⑦ Stop Wasting Time!

You know that time you spent watching a few episodes of Blacklist on Netflix? That’s 2 hours right there! Can you imagine all the stories you could have written during that time?

Stop spending time on unproductive activities such as scrolling on social media or lying around on the couch. You can make good use of that time to write instead!
