Medium Newbie Advice

Don’t Be a Medium Moocher!

Why You Should Become a Paying Member

In my unofficial, unpaid capacity as a Medium Sherpa,

and as a writer who makes a zillion dollars a month on this platform,

I am often asked for advice about how to succeed on Medium.

The first thing I say to every Newbie?

Don’t be a Medium Moocher.

A Medium Moocher is a writer who posts on Medium without becoming a paying member.

So what’s wrong with that?

We writers are paid solely on the basis of how much time Paying Medium Members spend reading our work.

If you join Medium, but don’t become a paying member?

When I clap for your work, it puts money in your pocket. But when you clap for me? Bubkas. (Which is a Yiddish term that translates to: zilch from you in my monthly payout.)

Don’t tell me you can’t afford $5 a month. Maybe that’s true if you’ve just joined the platform. But if you’ve gained followers and applause here?

Pay up, tightwad!

Till then, if you don’t have that little green halo around your portrait that tells me you’re a paying member?

I don’t care how good a writer you are. I will neither follow nor read you. And I’m not alone. Lots of other paying Medium writers feel the same way.

So in case you’re wondering why your latest Medium Masterpiece is going nowhere?

Maybe you need to buy yourself that little green halo.

It’s just a $5/month investment, but you could make zillions!

(You probably won’t, of course, especially if your latest Medium Masterpiece is a poem. But that’s another essay.)
