Summary

Justiss Goode has created a new Medium account called "Best Recycled News" to focus on news-related stories, inspired by strategies to gain traction on Medium by covering events highlighted by Google News, and motivated by fellow writers like Abena Talks and Quinn Oaks.

Abstract

Justiss Goode, a writer on Medium, has announced the creation of a second Medium account named "Best Recycled News." This decision was influenced by a strategy discussed by Abena Talks, which involves generating content based on events featured in Google News. Despite initial hesitations due to a history of starting and ending projects, Goode was motivated by the experiences shared by Quinn Oaks, who also embraced this approach. The new profile is dedicated exclusively to news-related stories, reflecting Goode's commitment to addressing significant world events and issues. This move underscores the responsibility of serious writers to use their skills to inform and engage readers on pressing topics, from social and political matters to environmental concerns.

Opinions

  • Justiss Goode believes that reaching 4,000 followers on Medium, while a milestone, lacks the expected thrill and is not the focus of their recent stories.
  • The creation of the "Best Recycled News" profile is seen as a way to maintain focus and avoid the potential inactivity of a new publication or newsletter.
  • Goode expresses enthusiasm about the new account, anticipating a continuous supply of interesting news to cover due to the chaotic state of world affairs.
  • There is an emphasis on the importance of writers using their talents to shed light on heavy issues and events that may be overlooked, regardless of personal opinions on these matters.
  • The writer acknowledges the role of serious writers in providing diverse perspectives, encouraging readers to reflect on viewpoints they may not have considered before.
  • Goode values the act of giving voice to important details and events, considering it a vital use of a writer's voice, especially in times when their voices matter even more.

WRITING ON MEDIUM

Do You Know Why I Created Another Medium Account?

It’s time to get focused on what’s going on in the world!

Since I started writing on Medium in May of 2021, my Justiss Goode profile and persona has grown consistently.

It was only a few days ago, that I published this about my latest milestone on the platform:

But just as the subtitle suggests, reaching this particular peak hasn’t been as thrilling as some writers might imagine.

However, I don’t want to give the impression that this story, or even the above-mentioned story is a gripe or complaint.

They’re not, and if you read one or both, you’ll see that it’s true.

Later on, you can read all about how I truly felt reaching 4000 followers.

But for now, allow me to share some news about my new Medium profile, and why I created it.

Take a moment and get acquainted with…

Medium’s Best Recycled News Provider

Allow me to tell you about the “faceless” Google News related profile and username I recently created.

My decision to finally create Best Recycled News as a second active Medium account, was prompted from a story written by Abena Talks.

Her story spoke about the strategy of gaining more traction on Medium, by creating content around the events that Google News highlights.

I had always thought about having some type of news related publication or newsletter, but given my track record of starting and ending projects on Medium, I dismissed the idea more times than I can count.

But the information Abena provided was just the motivation I personally needed (Thanks girl 😄).

Apparently Medium writer Quinn Oaks also read Abena’s story.

In fact, he gave such a splendid account of his own experience, I’ll let him tell you more about what Abena said, and how it motivated him.

Just read:

Quinn is clearly on a mission to document his experience providing Google News stories, and he’ll be sharing it with the Medium community.

Good for you Quinn, and anyone else who wants to get in on the fun!

I say BRAVO — the more the merrier.

Why? Because so much REAL SH*T is going on in the world today, that we serious writers (“serious” as in serious about our craft, not as in the opposite of funny), we have an important responsibility.

If ever there was a time for us writers to use our super powers for good, this is it.

Sure, I could have easily created yet another publication — making it my sixth one if you count the new Story Curators).

But knowing myself like I do, there’s the possibility of letting an additional publication or newsletter become inactive, if I grow weary of a theme or trying to maintain it.

A brand new profile, however, seems a bit more appealing to me, and provides the kind of “tunnel vision” focus that I actually thrive on.

Not only am I equally addicted to keeping my eye on the news, just as Quinn mentions he is, but I like the idea of having a whole other profile that’s exclusive to news related stories ONLY.

So now that I’ve created another Medium account, and got it all set up, I’m starting to get excited.

I think I’m really going to love it!

With all of the chaos in the world and important topics to write about, there will never be a shortage of interesting news.

Final Thoughts

Being a longtime freelance writer who has been covering a variety of different topics for years, it’s easy for me to settle into writing light and breezy content, or publish stories containing lots of smart writing advice.

But just like many of you, I also recognize how important it is, to give attention to the heavier issues, like all the trending world events, as well as social, political, and environmental issues that ultimately affect us all.

It’s not about which side of the issues that you fall on, because each and every one of us has the right to our opinion.

What it’s really about, from our perspective as serious writers, is that we use our God given talents and skills, to give voice to the events and the details, that some people might not otherwise hear about.

But even more, so some people end up reflecting on viewpoints that they may not have previously considered.

As writers — our voices especially matter. So be sure to think about how you’re currently using yours.
