Opinions

  • Writers with a conscience are obligated to use their work to contribute to social good.
  • The size of a writer's audience does not diminish their responsibility to address important issues.
  • Writing about social change, even in a small capacity, is a form of action and acknowledgment of current events.
  • Writers should challenge themselves to grow by tackling difficult topics and not just writing what is comfortable.
  • Artists, and particularly writers, have a special obligation to speak out against racism and social injustice.
  • Taking the time to develop into the kind of writer who is socially aware and conscious can help avoid future writing dilemmas.
  • Writers can find creative ways to stand up for what is right, regardless of their writing platform.
  • By laying a solid foundation now, writers can benefit later by becoming influential authors with a conscious.

Why Should Writers Use Their Creative Powers for Good?

If you’re a writer with a conscious, your writing is a gift to be shared in the right way.

We’re living in a time when writers of every kind, and on every level have a responsibility; at least those of us with a conscience. In addition to everything else we may be writing, we have an obligation to use our creative powers for good.

In fact, no matter what our form of creativity or artistic talent happens to be, we owe it to the world to use our platform for good.

I belong to the writers on writing club; meaning I’m a writer who is eternally devoted to writing about the ups and downs of the writer’s life and sharing my advice and opinions about it all.

I can’t help myself. Even when I vow to take a break from writing about writing, I slip back into it, because, among other reasons, I’ve learned so much along the way, during my incredibly long writing journey.

I really do hope to spare some of you a lot of the heartache that comes from not knowing a lot of stuff in the beginning.

Believe it or not, one of the important things that will ultimately make a difference to your writing later, is the theme of this story; dealing with the kind of writer you are now, and the kind you ultimately hope to be.

Have you stopped to evaluate the kind of writer you are, and determined the kind you want to be?

Creative Writers of Every Kind

Chances are, if you’re an aspiring author, then you’re probably already a blogger, article writer, and possibly a social media influencer, in addition to the writing you do for this platform.

You might even have hundreds or even thousands of followers. This writing platform has creative writers of every kind, and they use the platform for various reasons.

Maybe you’re a popular video creator and have tons of fans and subscribers on Youtube. How big or small your audience is doesn’t matter. It doesn’t change your responsibility as a writer, if you’re a writer with a conscience.

Writers with a conscience realize that our writing is a gift to be shared with the world, but also to be shared in the right way.

Are you using your “gift” and your various platforms to help bring awareness to your viewers?

A Writer’s Responsibility

When we see, hear, or learn about injustice going on, we have an obligation to use our powers for good! Taking some time to write about the need for social change is the least we can do.

It doesn’t have to be a regular feature or even a long drawn out article or expose, highlighting some particular issue we’ve spent time researching.

That would be nice, but it’s not necessary. Just do something to show that you see what’s happening and you give half a damn.

Simply taking the time and energy to put a few paragraphs together to acknowledge an issue is at least taking some type of action.

But if you sit back and have it in your mind to only write what’s comfortable for you, you’ll never really grow in your writing. Quite frankly, the same is true when it comes to what you read. Some stories are not easy to read and digest. But that doesn’t mean we don’t benefit from them.

Regardless of your writing platform, or what your form of creativity happens to be, as artists, we more than anyone, have a special obligation to speak out against racism and social injustice all around.

So ask yourself, if you’re not currently the kind of writer that you want to be, what will you do to start developing into that writer?

Avoid Future Writing Dilemmas

If you start by figuring out the answer to that question now, you’ll save yourself at least “some” of the heartache that is headed your way in the future.

That’s because at some point, various mental and emotional dilemmas will present themselves as obstacles. It come with the territory when you’re a writer long enough.

But obstacles or not, writers keep right on writing. Whatever kind of writing you do, and whatever platform you do it from, you can always find a creative way to stand up for what is right.

When you take the initiative and use your writing skills for good, you begin to lay a solid foundation for the type of writer, and eventually — author — you hope to become.

Hopefully, it will be one with a conscious.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, I just want to emphasize that these words may simply be based on my own advice and opinions, but being an online writer for well over fifteen years has taught me quite a few things; some of which I’ve already mentioned:

  • Writers of every kind, and on every level have a responsibility to use creative powers for good. If you have a following, you have a platform.
  • Our writing is a gift to be shared with the world, in the right way. The things we write can make a difference.
  • Deciding to only write what’s comfortable for you, will prevent you from growing as a writer.
  • Be determined to start becoming the kind of writer you really want to be, if you aren’t currently that kind of writer yet.
  • You will benefit later, by laying a solid foundation now, to be a writer with a conscious.
