Do You Hunger To Belong?

Author’s photo

Like everyone else, food satiates my stomach-growling hunger. We need fuel, so we eat. I also use food to satisfy my hunger-to-belong.

We are taught early on to attend to our physical needs and health. A parent’s quick response with food to a cry of hunger is a child’s first lesson on satisfying a physical need. Arguably, equally important are the social connections made throughout our life when we share, gift, or receive food.

The examples are endless: sharing bountiful holiday tables, eating ice cream with a ‘bestie’, forging short but meaningful connections with an engaging server during a meal out, etc.

Today’s challenges with huge social divides and recent social distancing mandates demand that we all proactively act to foster connections. Food can intrinsically help us to do this.
