How to Write a Resume that Actually Reaches the Recruiter
Do not finalise your resume without doing this

Folks, I have been busy searching for jobs for the past many months and was worried that I have not received a single call. I was wondering if any recruiter actually visited to view my resume in the different job portals I posted. When I was researching about the same, I realized that there exists a strong wall that is filtering out my resume to be thrown out into nowhere, even before it reaches the recruiter’s eyes.
On LinkedIn, on an average basis, I could see >200 applicants applying for various jobs within 15 hours. Of course, depends on the position, profile, location, etc. So, out of this high volume of applications how will LinkedIn (or any job portal) algorithm come out with a specific ranking to recommend candidates?
Behold the Villain — the Application Tracking System (ATS)
What is ATS and what went wrong with it ?
ATS posts jobs, screens resumes and supports the employer a lot in hiring. HR cannot go through piles of resumes to cherry pick the right talent fit for the job and hence arises the need for ATS. These include iCIMS, Taleo, Jobvite, etc.
Question in your mind — Aren’t such support systems there to help the employer and bridge that gap to easily pick the best suitable employee ? Why do we call this support system as the villain ?
Here comes the point. I’m all okay with the ATS except for its inept handling of screening resumes. Every technology has to reach a maturity level before it is implemented in the real world, else disasters are bound to happen like this one — top-10-massive-failures-of-artificial-intelligence-till-date
How does it become a job seeker’s nightmare?
ATS neither understands potential nor creativity. You may be a professional showcasing your experience through a modern resume style, but what’s the use if the ATS stops your resume like a security guard right at the gate. Ultimately, we want a resume that is professional, attractive as well as informative.
ATS is all a game of keywords and pre-defined rules
Here are the aspects which shocked me as a first-time reader, wherein ATS won’t be able to detect the matter properly.
- ATS searches for keywords in the job description and tries to match them with the resume for an exact match. Synonyms wouldn’t be considered
- Avoid text boxes, tables, and graphs, ATS won’t recognize them
- ATS reads top to bottom and left to right, so keep it simple, plain & straight
- Any information in Headers / Footers won’t be recognized. Some word resume templates have the name in the header — who would be read as a nameless resume
- If you have 3–4 words in your name, looks like ATS picks up the first & last
- Some ATS cannot recognize another form of the same keyword. Eg. Manage vs Managed, Analyze vs Analyzed, credit rating vs credit scoring, etc.
- The job description will have keywords that might have been repeated 4–5 times but may appear in the resume only 1 time, which will impact the score
