DIY — Repurposing Old Porch Railings

Another use for leftovers…

Old railings taken from my porch during the remodeling project a while back sat leaning up against my shed with weeds growing around them. I hesitated to throw them out. My inner voice kept telling me to save them.

My inner voice serves me well when I pay attention and listen.

The trigger for the start of this project was a home improvement show my wife, and I were watching. It was on a smaller scale, but they took a bunch of leftover materials and built a wall-mounted herb garden.

The light bulb went on, and I started looking at what I had left over from previous projects.

Yep, I had everything I needed.

My idea was to build an a-frame structure using the two railing pieces to support a set of garden boxes.

Next, I took some leftover lumber to build out the set of boxes to attach to the a-frame.

And just like that, three new growing spaces! Built entirely from materials I already had.

The next step is freshening it up with a coat of paint. (The only purchase I had to make.)

To facilitate the painting process, I disassembled the structure.

With the painting complete, the a-frame planter is reassembled and ready for paint touchup, soil, and seeds.

It’s amazing what can be built from leftover project materials. All it takes is a spark of creativity.
