Summary

Dennett's "Our dialysis story — chapter 8" recounts the logistical challenges and emotional strain of coordinating Ben's dialysis appointments with his upcoming surgery, alongside dealing with plumbing issues at home.

Abstract

In "Our dialysis story — chapter 8," Dennett describes a day filled with complications and waiting. Ben, who requires dialysis, faces a scheduling conflict with his pre-op and surgery appointments, leading to uncertainty about his discharge from the hospital. Despite the nephrologist's recommendation to skip a dialysis session and stay an extra day in the hospital, the conflict with the surgery schedule remains unresolved. Meanwhile, Dennett is also dealing with a series of mishaps with plumbers who have repeatedly failed to complete their work on time, adding to the stress of the situation. The narrative conveys a sense of frustration and the emotional toll of managing complex medical and home situations simultaneously.

Different day — same situation. I’m waiting.

Ben was NOT discharged last night. The hospital case worker set up his outpatient dialysis — a requirement for him to go home, BUT his first dialysis was set for Friday. He has pre-op this Friday. His dialysis schedule is Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. He has surgery next Friday. He can’t be at two places at the same time. All of that has to be worked out.

The nephrologist said to skip this Friday’s dialysis AND stay in the hospital another day to have one more dialysis before being discharged on Wednesday (today). BUT he can’t be discharged until the dialysis conflict with next week’s surgery is resolved. Haven’t heard from anyone about that despite the emails and messages I’ve left.

Because Ben was supposed to be discharged yesterday, he wasn’t on the hospital’s dialysis schedule for today. They are squeezing him in. It’s now a little after 1:00, and he’s still sitting in his room. Dialysis is four hours. If they took him now, he wouldn’t be done until sometime after 5:00. I HAVE to work tonight, even if I go to my client’s office at midnight, which may be the case if Ben isn’t discharged until 6 pm or later.

Plumbers didn’t finish yesterday. They forgot things. Needed different things.

The Prince of Plumbing said:

We’ll be here at 8 am tomorrow with everything we need.

I was up at 6 am. They arrived at 9:15 — after I called to find out where they were. They installed pipes to give me water in the backyard. THEN, they left because they forgot things, brought the wrong things, and needed other things.

We’ll be back in 30 minutes.

They were gone 90 minutes, arriving a short while ago. New estimated time of completion: 3:00.

Sigh. This is how I feel:
