The Benefits of Silence for Your Well-being
Silence and observation have a profound impact on our lives. This is why you need more quiet in your life.
To minimize noise and distractions in today’s fast-paced, technology-driven world is hard, but not impossible.

Distractions are now part of our daily lives, but should they be ?
Hi. My name is Teekay and I believe in the powerful tools of silence and observation.
Silence and observation have a profound impact on our lives. They deepen our understanding of our emotions, strengthen our relationship with ourselves and simplify our thinking.
Silence helps us find inner peace and tranquility, be more present in the moment and to make better decisions.
Take hiking, or simply walking.
Hiking completely removes distractions of everyday life. It clears the mind. Walking has long been part of my routine. It’s always helped me gain a deeper understanding of my surroundings, improve my problem solving abilities and may even have longterm positive effects on my cognitive performance.
Are you going through a difficult time right now ? Here’s a challenge for you: plan a hike in the next few days, preferably in the woods.
I can almost guarantee that you’ll find more solace in the peacefulness of nature than you ever could by talking to friends, going to therapy or worse yet, by going out drinking and partying.
The sound of birds singing, the rustling of leaves and the babbling of brooks all contribute to a sense of tranquility and calm that help us find inner peace and clarity.
In fact, walking in nature has been shown to improve cognitive abilities in a number of ways.
Here are a few examples:
- Walking in nature improves attention and focus. Studies have found that spending time in nature can help reduce symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), as well as improve overall attention and focus.
- Nature’s calming effect on the mind and body improve memory and learning as well. Studies that have shown that spending time in nature can improve memory and learning attribute that to the reduction of stress induced by outdoors walking and earthing (or grounding).
- Have you ever noticed how pumped you feel when you’re out in nature ? That’s because nature has another superpower which is to stimulate the imagination of humans and inspire new ideas by improving our moods.
On the other hand, the power of observation can be seen in the practice of mindfulness.
By paying attention to our thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations, without judgment, we gain a deeper understanding of ourselves, our habits and patterns. This opens the door to positive changes in our lives.
I’ve touched on this before on this blog, but I struggled a lot with anxiety before.
Anxiety is this constant worrying about the future. It’s destructive and nearly impossible to beat.
However, by spending 13 days on an uninhabited island, I allowed myself to observe my patterns, to feel, to reconnect with nature and God.
That unique, once in a lifetime experience allowed me to identify the negative habits I was partaking in, which were the root of my panic attacks and crippling anxiety.
I was using mindfulness before I even knew what it meant.
All I did was go back to the basics, cut out all the noise and let peace come to me, and it did.
Little did I know, that would change the rest of my life.

- So, How Do You Minimize Noise and Distractions?
Trust me, you don’t have to go as far as live on an uninhabited island ^^
- Create a quiet space: Dedicate a specific area in your home or office as a quiet space, where you can go to escape noise and distractions. This could be a room, a corner or even a chair.
- Limit technology use: Set specific times of the day to check and respond to emails, social media, and other notifications. Turn off your phone or put it in another room when you don’t need it.
- Use noise-canceling headphones or earplugs: If you can’t control the noise around you, try to block it out with noise-canceling headphones or earplugs. No excuses.
- Practice mindfulness: Pay attention to your thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations. This can help you to be more aware of when your mind is getting distracted and to redirect your attention back to the task at hand. A game changer for students.
- Prioritize your time: Learn to say no to things that do not align with your values or that drain your energy. Make time for yourself and your needs. Be self-full, but not selfish.
- Get organized: The best way to stay organized is to let go of all the clutter. One you own 1 plate, dishes can never pile up. Adopt minimalism and let it work its magic.
- Take breaks: Give yourself regular breaks throughout the day to recharge, refocus and rest your mind. Working out is a great way to do that, but so is reading.
- Practice and EMBRACE silence whenever possible: No music, no background noise, none of that, just be.
