Discovery: How to Get a Story Boosted on Medium

Follow these 3 main steps.

In case you missed it, I am going for 2 goals on Medium. Getting a story boosted is the first one I’m focusing on.

Getting a boost to a Medium story can increase views, earnings, and followers (maybe). But it’s a struggle to figure out how to actually get one of these infamous boosts.

I decided to make it my goal to:

  • Figure out how to get boosted
  • Write an article that actually gets boosted
  • Tell you all about it so you can do it too

Luckily, there are already great stories that cover the boosting topic well (thanks for making my life easier!), and all we need to do is follow these 3 main steps.

Step 1: Find a publication that will boost stories.

Thank you Robin Wilding 💎 for doing this work!

She gives a list of topics these publications focus on, and thankfully there’s a wide variety.

Robin also explains you don’t have to have an article in a publication in order for it to get boosted. (But it helps.)

Step 2: Figure out what gets boosted (and what gets the boot)

I think most of this is pretty self-explanatory. You want to write from your experience, and avoid spammy and clickbait topics.

Topics that get boosted are:

  • ones that teach something
  • original (it’s written from your relevant perspective)
  • well-crafted and high quality
  • memorable

What to avoid:

  • clickbait titles
  • stories about Medium
  • AI-generated content
  • anything spammy, illegal, or too risqué
  • medical health claims that can’t be verified

I write a lot of my stories about Medium, which is a no-no. But luckily, I have another favorite topic up my sleeve!

Step 3: Write a boost-worthy article

Once again Robin comes in and saves the day and gives us everything we need to know to get an article boosted:

A couple of things Robin taught me that I currently do but should avoid for this boosting goal:

  • use emojis
  • add a question at the end of an article for engagement
  • include a call-to-action

Final Thoughts

I am going to work on some (hopefully) boost-worthy articles in the upcoming weeks. I’ll be sure to update you as soon as I reach this goal.

If you’re also going for the boost, feel free to let me know in the comments and we can compare notes along the way.
