In a few previous posts, I spoke about PlayStation's collaboration with Discord, which was working to bring the discord platform to PlayStation users. Players have been waiting quite a while for the update, but they have to wait no longer.

The PS5’s highly anticipated 7.0 update has started rolling out to users, with Discord support being the flagship feature. Previously tested in beta, the integration of Discord into PS5 consoles enables players to engage in voice chats across different hardware platforms and use Share Screen functionality.

Another key enhancement in this update is the VRR support at 1440p resolution, which provides improved visual performance when utilizing a VRR-compatible HDMI 2.1 display, assuming that the game also supports VRR.

The update also includes a “join game” icon in Party Chats, a “friends who play” tile that allows users to see which games their social circle is active in, and the option to manually upload game captures to the PlayStation App.

Additionally, several quality-of-life improvements have been added to the update. For example, there are now more accessible options for PS4-to-PS5 saved data migration and PS5-to-PS5 data transfer, screen reader improvements, and wireless device updates for the DualSense controller.

It is worth noting that a new game capture feature has also been introduced in a limited release in the US and UK. For users in these regions, voice commands can save gameplay clips.

To save their gameplay footage, users can use voice prompts such as “Hey PlayStation, capture that” or “Hey PlayStation, start recording.”

They can also save a specific duration of gameplay ranging from 15 seconds to 60 minutes by commanding their console to capture footage for a particular amount of time.

For example, to save five minutes of gameplay footage, one can say, “Hey PlayStation, capture the last five minutes.”

This 7.0 update is a 1.1GB download and arrives during a crucial time for Sony and its PlayStation brand.

According to Jim Ryan, the PlayStation boss, the PS5 stock shortage is over, and more than 30 million units have been sold globally since December 2022.

The launch of PlayStation VR 2 in February, along with the forthcoming releases of Final Fantasy XVI in June and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 later in the year, makes 2023 an exciting time for gamers.

Final Words

With the integration of Discord and other enhancements, Sony has demonstrated its commitment to enhancing the user experience for its customers.

It will be interesting to see what other features and updates the company has planned for the PlayStation brand in the future, but for now, gamers can enjoy the exciting new features in the 7.0 update.
