Summary

The article emphasizes the importance of writers on Medium adhering to proper image attribution and editing practices to ensure a smooth editorial process and avoid legal issues.

Abstract

The author, an editor for Illumination and other publications on Medium, expresses concern over the increasing number of writers who fail to include proper links to the images they use, which is essential for copyright compliance. This oversight not only risks legal action against the writers and the platform but also disrespects the editors' unpaid work. Editors, who are also writers with their own commitments and responsibilities, volunteer their time to help writers improve their work and reach their audience. The article urges writers to submit their best work, including proper image credits and thorough self-editing, to facilitate a more efficient editorial process, enhance the quality of their stories, and ensure fair compensation for everyone involved.

Opinions

  • Writers are reminded to provide links to the images they use to avoid copyright infringement and associated legal fees.
  • The lack of proper image attribution is seen as a sign of writers' laziness or forgetfulness, which disrespects the editors' time and effort.
  • Editors on Medium are unpaid volunteers who balance their own writing, reading, and personal responsibilities while helping other writers.
  • The article stresses the importance of writers submitting well-edited and polished articles, suggesting the use of tools like Microsoft Word's Read Aloud feature for self-editing.
  • Writers are encouraged to take their own photos or create unique images to avoid copyright issues and save time for editors.
  • The author emphasizes the value of the free editorial services provided on Medium, contrasting it with the costs typically associated with professional editing services.
  • A call to action is made for writers to give their best in 2024, envisioning a world with more peace, love, and fewer problems through collective effort and excellence.

Did The Rules On Medium Changed, Or Are Writers Getting Lazy?

As an editor for Illumination and other publications, lately, I find that many writers are forgetting that they should post a link to the image they use, that pulls readers to their stories. By posting a link, they are protecting themselves and the publication from copyright fees and laws.

What is going on writers?

Too many of you are forgetting that you MUST post a link to the image you post in your stories. If you don’t you will be wasting the Editor’s time and delaying your stories and that of other writers who obey the rules.

The owners of these pictures will prosecute anyone using their images illegally without their permission.

Illumination or Medium cannot afford to be sued for your incompetence. We editors have been saying this over, and over and over and it’s getting worse. Lately most of the articles I am about to edit, no link is there for the image they use.

That takes up time and the writers who do the right thing, sometimes the time runs out and their power of words must wait for another day or time.

The editors on all of these platforms are writers too. So, they must write their stories, and read the stories of the writers who read theirs. They also have a life, commitment, obligations, and other responsibilities outside Medium that must be in order before they can volunteer their free/unpaid time. Others are battling health issues too but still find the time to give back to you.

THE EDITORS ON MEDIUM ARE NOT BEING PAID FOR THEIR SERVICES!

I repeat.

THE EDITORS ON MEDIUM ARE NOT BEING PAID FOR THEIR SERVICES!

We volunteer our time because we care about your power of words, wish you success, and want to help get your story to your readers so you can be paid and or get boosted.

When you give us your best, we have more time to read and edit your reader’s power of words too. That allows them more time to read yours. Your best, plus less time, equals more stories to read, which leads to more money for all parties involved. More smiles and gratitude too.

Give us your best. You are getting ours for free.

Go and ask Google how much editors charge per word to edit. Then compare it to what you get here on Medium. You end up being the winner. Share the spoils, by giving back your best.

Take the time to read your articles before sending them out. In the Review Tab on Microsoft Word, you can press Read Aloud/Speech and your story will be read back to you. You can hear the mistakes that you made and correct them too.

You can also be unique or be a trendsetter by taking your own pictures. Or be bold, creative, and innovative by using arts and crafts to create something related to your story. You don’t have to worry about anyone suing you for using their images. Use your own. That will benefit both editors and publication while saving time.

P.S. Be honest about that too. We rely on you, to be honest in that area.

Please, give us your best. You are getting ours for free!

Merry Christmas Everyone

For 2024, give the world your best. Imagine a world where everyone gives their best. We will have more peace and love. Less problems too.
