OFFENSIVE COMEDY

Did Frankie Boyle Go Too Far With His Jimmy Savile Joke?

And am I a bad person for finding it hilarious?

In case you didn’t know, Frankie Boyle is a controversial British comedian.

He has offended many people over the years. But he’s also made many people laugh, and that’s the main thing. Sometimes, the funniest comedy is the stuff you feel like you shouldn’t be laughing at it.

He first started to gain wide exposure on mainstream TV when he was a regular panelist on Mock the Week from 2005 to 2009.

On that show, he made a joke about Richard Hammond, who had been in a high-speed car crash. He was in a coma for two weeks and suffered from amnesia.

In 2010, Boyle had his own show, Tramadol Nights. One of my favourite bits was his Knightrider sketch:

He’s done various other shows, but most notable recently has been Frankie Boyle’s New World Order. This involves him chatting to other comedians about current events. But it’s his closing monologues that contain his most shocking and funniest lines:

Okay, now you’re warmed up, let’s get to the main purpose of this story.

Jimmy Savile was a paedophile, rapist, and necrophiliac. When he wasn’t doing that, he would also sometimes present TV and radio shows.

So, what do you get when you combine Britain’s most offensive comedian with Britain’s most prolific sex criminal? A very offensive joke, that’s what.

Frankie says the joke during a performance on his 2016 tour, Hurt Like You’ve Never Been Loved. The peak of the joke begins at the 11:58 mark, but I’ve started the clip a couple of minutes earlier so you get the context:

The first time I heard that, I laughed so much I nearly fell off my chair. And I know it’s shockingly offensive, but that just makes it all the funnier. The feeling of shame at finding it funny just adds fuel to the humour fire.
