Summary

CD Projekt Red is developing a remake of the original Witcher game and The Witcher 4, with the remake expected to release after the fourth installment, both utilizing Unreal Engine 5, and The Witcher 4 introducing a new protagonist.

Abstract

CD Projekt Red has announced significant updates regarding the future of The Witcher gaming series. The studio is working on a remake of the first Witcher game, which will be based on Unreal Engine 5. However, fans should anticipate a longer wait as the remake's release is planned to follow the launch of The Witcher 4, internally codenamed "Polaris." The Witcher 4 will also leverage Unreal Engine 5 and is set to introduce a new main character, diverging from the series' traditional focus on Geralt. Additionally, The Witcher 4 is intended to be the first installment in a new trilogy, ensuring that fans have much to look forward to in the coming years. The studio's CEO, Adam Kiciński, has indicated that the remake will benefit from the technologies developed for Polaris, suggesting a close relationship between the development of the two projects.

Details on the Witcher Remake and the Witcher 4

The remake won’t be coming as soon as we first thought.

In a previous post, I spoke about CD Projekt Red’s announcement of their remake of the first Witcher game. If you would like to read that post, click here.

Unfortunately, though, fans may have to wait longer than expected for this exciting remake. The studio recently stated that the remake won’t be released until some time after the fourth Witcher game comes out.

CD Projekt CEO Adam Kiciński stated the following while responding to a Q&A regarding the launch times.

“[The remake] will come after Polaris, which is a consequence of how we think about this project … We think that [the] remake will be based in big part on technologies from Polaris. So, it will be developed partially parallel to Polaris, but once Polaris is launched, everything for Polaris will be then in the final shape and it will be, partially, be produced in [the] remake.”

If you haven't put it together yet, “Polaris” is CDPR’s codename for the fourth Witcher game. Minimal details were revealed for this game back in March of this year. But what we do know is that similar to the remake, the fourth Witcher game will be built on Unreal Engine 5.

Interestingly, the fourth Witcher game will not follow Geralt as the main character, which it has for the past three games. Instead, the game seems as though it will follow a whole new character, likely from a different school of Witchers.

The fourth Witcher game will be a part of a whole new trilogy. So even after it is released, fans will still have something interesting to look forward to.

Unfortunately, we have no information on a release date since the pre-production for the fourth game only began earlier this year. It’s also likely that we won’t get any teasers or trailers for this game until we are a lot closer to the launch date, which is currently unknown.

Apparently, CDPR plans to release the full trilogy within six years after the fourth game comes out. I hope that is the case, but honestly, I find it hard to believe and kinda unlikely.
