Defiance of a Scary Number in the Heavens
Poem 3 of the Eminent Number Trilogy

Hey, Zero, You don’t scare me! I know where you live.
Someday people here will build a telescope big enough to find you fifteen billion years away, beyond the stars and galaxies, beyond the microwave eggshell, a billion years before time, when space lay undivided by you in your lover’s womb.
We will peek through your window to see you naked in your home.
When I feel empty I know you are watching, but you are too far away to touch me.
You race farther every day in every direction, so, with all creation between us, you surround me, but will never catch me.
I am not afraid.
