The Death of a Medium Friend

James Frank Sanders

The Garden of Death by Rafael Vargas, from Wikimedia Commons

I did not expect to make friends on Medium.

But I have.

Since COVID, I have found friends in funny places, online somewhere. I am in a group of twenty American Reds and Blues nationwide who meet monthly to listen to each other. After meeting online for a year, Peter and his wife Mary hosted Rebecca and me last fall in their New York state home.

When I joined Medium in May 2022, the first story I read was by James Frank Sanders. James introduced me to Crows Feet, one of my favorite publications. He didn’t write for money, which would be my approach. Frank’s stories were often about life in assisted living from a positive perspective. I’m 73; maybe one day, I will find myself in such a place. Most important, he was still creating stories at 96.

I discovered another mentor.

I read everything he wrote and waited eagerly for the following tale. Because I, too, have difficulty remembering names, my favorite Sanders story offered an ingenious solution.

Two days ago, I read about Frank’s death.

I’ve lost a friend.
