How to Remember Names
This simple method works well for you and me.

I wished to improve my ability to remember names. I wanted all the members of our Senior Home to feel like cousins. Near and dear.
Knowing everyone’s first name was the best way to accomplish this. No small task, I thought, until I tried this simple method.
Everyone is fond of their name. They like the sound of it. Hearing their name spoken gets their attention.
How do I go about improving my name-calling abilities?
I needed to stop saying, with downcast eyes, “Hi Pal or Hello,” with no name following.
How I accomplished my mission.
We were sitting at our lunch table with my friend Willene, a gregarious woman who knows the names of all the staff and many renters.
With my small spiral notebook in hand, I would signal to Willene the person I wished to list, and she would tell me their name.
I would print their name with a reminder tip next to their name.
Katina is the Assistant Manager, and Kerina is Activity Director. I jotted each name with her title.
To remember each renter’s name, I gave a personal hint to each. I used a personal characteristic, something unique about them.
For example, In the 1940s, Rick was a singer with the Fred Waring orchestra. I printed his name and made a brief notation. “Sings.”
Now I have him pegged. A glance at his name and my tip gives me my answer.
When someone moves from us, I draw a thin line across their name. I want to remember them. They may come back.
This memory method works for me.
At mealtimes, I sit where I have an unobstructed view of the people at their tables. I go through my list while looking at the people and studying their facial features.
This helps when you see them in other places.
Recently on my daily walk, I could see at a distance a woman with her hairdo short and chopped. I knew it was J.J. I greeted her with a shout,
“How is it going for you, J.J.?”
She answered back with my name. I was pleased to hear it. We now know each other. We know each other’s names, and we are family.
